Busted electrical plug on top of 96 4Runner transfer case
I friend of mine just bought a 96 3.4L Auto 4x4 4Runner, and it turns out the 4WD isn't engaging (it shifts into 4H and 4L, but the front diff doesn't engage). I crawled underneath the runner and started looking at the transfer case, and I noticed there was a small electrical plug on the top of the transfer case, and the plug seems to be smashed against the under body of the runner. I jacked up the runnner and got all 4 tires off the ground. Threw it into 4H, and again, no wheel spin up front. I then wiggled the plug on top of the transfer case, and BAM! Front wheels spinning and 4WD light illuminated in the dash.
Im trying to figure what the plug is, so I can look for a new part. I'd also love to see pic of a transfer case outside of a runner so I know exactly what the plug looks like and what I am dealing with. Another question is...is there any way to get to the top of the transfer case besides dropping it (from what I've read, I'd need to drop the tranny along with the case cause it's an automatic).
Also...has anyone else seen where this plug is smashed into the undercarriage of the runner? Seems like it SHOULD have plenty of space...but it does not.
Here is the best pic my buddy could get of his issue. The plug in question is the white on on the right side of the pic.
Any help would be greatly appreciated...he drives up to the mountains a lot, and it's a little sketchy without 4WD!

I had a very similar problem with my 96! Mine has the 5 speed though. Driving home from college for break and I noticed my 4x4 light not coming on in the snow and my hubs not locking up. It happened for about 3 weeks until it magically started working again. If anyone happens to know how to fix it, I am sure we would both love to hear.
