Broken Antenna - Can I Just Unplug it? (post-search thread)

I've searched around alot and couldn't find anything answering my question.

I broke my power antenna, yeah everyone knows the story, that loud grinding noise that ppl stare at u in parking lots with.

Instead of doing the right thing and fixing it immediatly, i was curious if there was a fuse i could pull or a wire i could unplug so the antenna just doesn't work 100%. I only listen to CD's, so the antenna is useless to me.

If there is accually a thread that says this..........

Well, if you just use the CD, then I don't know why it would be going up?!

If you have an aftermarket CD player, it might be wired for it to go up, even if the radio is not selected. I would first look to see if there is a fuse. I don't think there is though.

If not, you can either just pull out the old antenna, buy loosening the top nut with the grooves, and then pulling it out. (The antenna needs to be in the up position). Or, you could take out the head unit, find the wire that attaches the antenna, and unplug it. To take out the head unit, you'll need to pop out the center console, starting with the hand brake area, then all the way up. Theres two screws hidden behind the climate control area, then you can pop that out.

Use a penny to remove the ring that holds the antenna, (clockwise) then have someone turn the ignition key to on position with the radio on. The antenna will go up, wait for it to come all the way out and catch it from falling and scratch your hood. (You might need to pull it a little bit.)

Check out the last post in this thread:

You could also cut the wire from the head unit, but in my opinion, just unplugging the antenna motor would be easier to do and easier to reverse when you get around to fixing the antenna. Removing the antenna shaft does not stop the antenna motor from running.

Good luck-

if you chose to cut the wire, it should be the blue one.

Yes, you can and it's not difficult at all.
Scroll down for a blurry pic of the plug you're looking for, though it's quite obvious once you get in there.

Unplug the power connector the antenna itself... pull the fender liner and reach in...

Id wrap some silicone self stick tape over the plug to keep water out of it but its no biggie...

Just swap out the motor unit with a fixed (static) one. Part No. T01-62-F1 / 86300-35090. There are instructions online somewhere...I found them but not sure if I save the url. The link on the yotatech tech page is broken but someone else posted it up. I did the swap in one evening by myself. Although having an assistant would be helpful.

However, if you want to unplug it, there is a quick disconnect for the motor wiring inside the passenger side fender liner. It's about the 1100 o'clock position as you look at the tire or between the tire and the antenna. The write up on how to swap the antenna shows the location.
