Brembo blanks and Akebono ProACT ceramics...

So I purchased these due to worn out rotors and pads, so I decided to try the Brembos because of their long time good reputation here and the Akebono because I got a good price and they got decent reviews.

I followed installation to the T...used the anti squeal that came with the pads, made sure everything was installed correctly based on my Chiltons, even went as far as torquing the caliper bolts ( I know this isn't necessary). After all the installation was said and done (after pushing the pistons back in) the fluid level in the cylinder was perfect.

Well, this would be day 3 driving on them and yesterday I noticed a high pitched "whistle/squeal". It doesn't happen when I start up in the morning. it seems to only happen when the rotors heat up. It stops when i come to a complete stop. (adding moderate brake pressure, but not when slowing down).

The rotors and pads were cleaned with brake cleaner after installation. Is there a break in period for these? Is the setup just so new that when the rotors heat up and expand it is just enough to barely touch the pads and make this happen? I've checked and double checked my work...

note: the Chiltons says that you need to put anti squeal between the shim and the backing, and then on the outside of the shim, but this particular pad came with a shim already "glued" to the backing. It is not an aluminum shim though, more like a rubber compound. But it is about as thick as the aluminum shim listed in Chiltons. I aplied the anti-squeal from the package onto the back of this "glued" on shim...

ideas would be awesome!

some brakes do require a break-in period, or rather a process. Every set i put on any one of our vehicles, i take it out and get it up to about 50mph, then slow down to 25 pretty quickly, i do this 3-4 times, and to this day, i have never had a problem, hell the mrs has about 3 years on her pads right now, and she is heavy on them. did you see if the instruction packet had any info on a break-in procedure or not?

No Instruction packed with the pads. Was just the pads in a cellophane wrapping w/ the akebono cardboard backing. I have done the 60-stop thing about 6-8 times.

It's a faint whistle would be hard to notice as a bystander. Like I said, doesn't happen when the rotors are cold.

no, dont stop when you are doing it, you just slow it down rapidly to 25 or so, never stop while doing it.

listen some rotors and pads will make a noise when braking. i sell power slot rotors that have the slot in them to help disipate the gas that is made when braking. when these rotors are installed correctly and a good set of pads put with them they WILL make a noise and it is ok. the noise i hear is a slight whoooshing noise when braking. in my case that is exceptable. and most brakes require a 1000 mile brake in period to seat the pads to the rotors. just try to avoid any emergency braking after the first time you got them hot. this is my opinion. Well I did come to fairly quick stops when I was breaking them in.
The forum I was on said to do this. Guess this is wrong. Haven't done it since.

I hope they are fine; that wouldn't hurt them would it?

The whistling starts when I'm just cruising though. I guess I'll give it some time and hope it goes away. Also never had ceramics so I guess could be it too. Different compound different noise...

99 taco xtra cab 2.7 4x. Oh and the whistle started before I took them out and did the rapid slow down. I did this in hopes it would solve it.

well, my idea just went out the door. On my 94 4runner, at about 35-40 the drivers mirror gets a faint whistle to it, when i pull it in, it goes away. i thought... well you know, but obviously not.

Ha ya I've never heard it before this. So ya it HAS to be something with the new rotors and pads. hoping it's just because they are just that. New.
