Break in period...

So I took my 04 to 100mph today and i was thinking...

with 864 miles on the odo. did i just mess up my break in period. It was only for 10 secs.

How long should I be waiting until I floor it and stuff?

Also, at which point will I see the mileage improve (after break in), right now i kinda getting 15 - 16 mpg. But I think that also has something to do with the 20's.

Also, at which mileage should I be switch over to Mobil 1...

.5k, 1k, 10k, or other?

Thanks

My mechs put it this way: Older engines and trannies need a break in period, newer ones don't. They're all master mechs so I figure the info is probably correct.

i wouldn't worry about it, if anything you are just helping the rings to seat by putting a heavy load on them

Many years ago the old mechanics told me to break it in the way you're gonna use it. (This was re: street bikes) Give it a couple hundred easy miles, then gradually ramping up the rpms and allowing a decent cooldown cycle, starting right out of the show room was what they recommended.

I've heard guys say racers run a brand new motor flat out don't they? Well sure, but they also rebuild it after very few hours....

I'm thinkin you'll probably be ok. From everything I heard over the years the best way to break in a motor is to baby it around town for the 1st 500 miles. if it's a manual shifting before 3200 rpm. Then start bringing the shift points gradually higher, 3500 3700 4000 each next hundred miles or so. I seriously doubt you harmed to motor there. I'd also say you are safely in the window to change over to synthetic at this point.

OBTW: Congrats on the new rig!! I see you wasted no time getting some miles on her. You weren't by any chance trying to outrun any more falling trees were ya? Jus kiddin. Hey be safe down there! I hear another Cane is headed that way. Take her to high ground and find a cement parking structure.

Everything needs a break in, the friction clutches in the trans, front and rear end, driveline, basically any part that wears against another part needs a break in but today with everything being built so much better and to closer specs you don't really have to worry as much, but it never hurts but lets face it, demo and rental cars get the life beat out of them from day 1 and I've seen them go 150k plus so long as you buy a well made vehicle which you did and maintain it properly your good to go.

With synthetic, I would wait till 15k but other say after the 1st change, or 5k, I tend to follow the Corvette guys and they typically run dino for the 1st several changes at 3k.

Now with the sports bikes they run them through every gear and then drain the oil, of course you need a dyno, has to do with the trans and motor oil being mixed and the metal shavings mixing into the gears

while you do need a break-in, going to 100 for 10 seconds one time is really not a big deal. if you were running it up to and staying at 100 for an hour, that wouldnt be as smart, but would most likely not matter either.

its all about changing speeds and rpms.. keeping the engine revving up and slowing down revving up slowing down... etc etc.

no need to stress about it.

This method works well.....Allow 300 for the breakin, during the 300 miles while at crusing speeds go WOT for a few seconds and then let off.

After the 300 miles drive it like you want to.

At 1,500 miles change the break in oil to whatever oil you plan to use. This will remove any particles that occured during the engine break in.
