Bouncy Speedo

My speedometer ticks loudly when cold and lightly when warmed and the needle bounces a little even when at a steady speed. It really doesnt bother me enough to yank everything apart. But it would bother me if it stops working because i dont want my mileage to stop being counted. Is it bad for it to leave it alone?

Mine does the same thing...been doin it since I got the rig, I'm pretty used to it. The clicking isn't even apparent when its completely warmed up, course my subs kind of drown out everything that could bug me anyway. But you'll be fine...its a pretty easy fix as far as I know, just buy the cable and replace it. I think somebody's got a write-up on it somewhere but for some reason I'm drawing a blank right now...

Just did this on my truck. The big question; is it your speedo or your cable? Chances are it's your cable if there's no more noise than bouncing. I swapped in the sr5 gauges into my 89 winter before last and it immediatelly started screaming and grinding over 20 so I put my old gauges back. Because it didn't do it until this I know it's not my cable. I them had to change the od to actually add 10K miles before I gotr inspected a week ago, it might be different for the 2nd gen but once you have the cluster apart and the gauge disasssembled, you can kick things around. I might have the old gauge around somewhere...

Mine does the same on my 91. My 89 pickup had the grinding when cold but not the jumping needle. My 91 was screaming so I replaced the spedometer cable tinking it would fix the jumpy needle but it only fixed the screaming noise. Upon inspection (I've had the cluster out 3 times), I decided the spedometer is prablably exlectival becaus the needle didn't seem mechanincal and the fact that the cable didn't fix it confirms that idea. Moral of the story, they all do that and there isn't a fix for it that I know of.

Mine did the same thing on my 92 Celica. I bought some lithium white grease and lubed the cable. So far, no problems.

My speedo was bouncing. Then it started squeaking way too loud so I bought a new cable for $52 from TOR, problem solved.

I agree, try greasing it, should fix it.

The bouncing isn't all that bad for me...maybe a 1-2mph jump. The noise isn't all that bad either, only if the engine is completely cold and its quiet in the car...other than that its all good. I've got so many other rattles and squeaks to listen to it doesn't bother me all that much

"Bouncy speedo"? Nobody has a silly comment?

I initially didn't want to 'click" it.

The dealership wanted $80 so I got one for like$13 at the local auto parts store instead. Only diference I could see is that it doesn't have teh plastic things that clip into the metal stops.
