I'm assuming some of you have a auxillary tranny coolers installed. Any of you have it installed 'after' the radiator? Meaning the hot tranny fluid comes out of the trans into the stock cooler (radiator), then into the auxillary cooler, and finally back into the tranny.

If so, any of you ever have any problems/issues with overcooling the trans fluid?? I'm in central PA, so the winters get pretty darn cold (0° on the colder nights +/- 10° )?

There seems to be two different camps on this. Those that install it as I've described above. And those that install 'before' the stock cooler, which puts the hot tranny fluid into the auxillary cooler first, then into the stock radiator, and finally back into the trans. The debate between as to which method is truly right seems to be pretty unclear.

I want to install a Hayden Rapid-Cool #679 over this weekend so any feedback would be appreciated.

I'm curious to hear what other people have to say. My plan (I have my cooler sitting in the back of my 4runner at the moment) was to run it after the stock cooler. My thinking was to let the stock cooler absorb some of the heat before hitting the new cooler, which only sees transmission fluid (is not working to cool two things like the stock). I wonder whether putting the stock cooler last would actually warm up the transmission fluid coming from the new cooler? I obviously have no evidence to support this, but could imagine it happening.

There's other threads here on this topic, but the general concensus is that tranny fluid is REALLY hard to overcool. I installed mine after the stock cooler.

David, the idea of the stock cooler actually giving back some heat is why most people opt to install after stock.

EDIT: Just saw that this is a bit old, you may have already found those other threads.

Like Tom said, after the stock cooler.

The reason the stock will give heat back is because it is located in the radiator. So the hot coolant will warm up the fluid.

I installed mine AFTER the radiator cooler. After speaking to Hayden, Level 10 and Amsoil (I use synthetic ATF) they all feel it is REAL hard to over-cool ATF.

As a worst case, you could place a piece of cardboard over the cooler on those REAL cold days. You are reminding me why I moved to the south tho....after 30+ years in SE Pennsylvania and NJ the winters are MUCH nicer here in NC!
