Unhappy Battery Acid is Bad…

I just put my new engine in and I forgot to secure my battery. For some reason I opened my hood yesterday only to find acid EVERYWHERE! I immediately poured baking soda all over my engine and removed the battery. New hoses and belts are on there way. My new battery has already been installed. It’s a gel battery; I won’t deal with the liquid anymore. Here are the results.

Yes it is an optima.
My old battery was rubbing against the wheel from the power steering and it cracked a whole in it. The fan then did it's job of spreading it everywhere.

Sorry to see the damage
Do you think anything else is affected other than the hoses and belts?

Aside from the paint, no. Everything else is fine.

Looks like my 4Runners engine!

I got the optima red top too and it rocks. I saw the Optima reps. at the Summit Truckfest chop off a corner of the battery with a sawzall, reinstall it in thier pickup and start er' up, SWEET! It also recaherges quicker and starts better in the cold. Good choice!

I'm cursed. I've wanted one for so damn long and it's been nothing but trouble for me.

I know what you mean by trouble. That seems to be all mine is good for lately. I still had reliability until today. Now she barely runs.

Good luck with the clean-up and repaint.

I know this is a geek comment...

...but the Optima is not a gel battery and it does use lead acid - it is just a completely different setup than the traditional lead plates. It is called AGM (absorbed glass mat). Check it out - it's cool. They do rock - the cases are freakin thick. I had my big Group 31 yellow top shake loose on a trip in Mexico, and it was leaning against the radiator shroud and some other part (can't remember which)... anyway, it left a deep mark in the side of the case, but it was fine. A regular battery case would have been toast.

I noiced you don't have the hold down bracket in place. You need to use the plastic spacer that came with the baterie to make it work. It snapes onto the underside of the baterie. Once that is in place, it fits perfectly:
