Bad shake at high speeds with bigger tires

Hey guys,

I recently put bigger tires on my 97 4runner, went from 255/70/16 to 265/75/16, now when i get over 55mph my 4runner shakes pretty bad, i had the tires balanced but have gotten an alignment, what should i do?

Take it back and tell them to try again.

Did this happen instantly after they put them on, or was it fine at first?

My moms u-joint went out on here 99 limited 4runner with 265/75/16 bfg at's. Don't know if its related to size or not? Might want to check there.

Is this vibration constant, or does it get worse the faster you go above 55mph? Is it only on the throttle or while coasting too?

i have the same problem with 285's its like right around 60mph it shakes real bad but if i go faster its not bad. check to see if your wheels are cupped. that is my problem.

It happened about a day or two after i put them on, it gets bad from 55-70 then settles down a bit and is only on the throttle.

Sounds like a u-joint to me.

Same symptoms i experienced while driving my mom's runner.

It would start shaking as soon as you hit 55mph and would get worse the faster it went, didn't get above 65, so can't say if it would have gone a way at a certain speed.

Ended up being the lower u-joint

True, the reason i suggested the u-joint was because he said it only happens on the throttle, so its not constant. Therefore i would bet it is drive line related, so my first guess is u-joint.

I agree that if it is only vibrating when on the throttle that it is likely U-joint related...
On the flip side, if it is on or off throttle, make sure they balanced the wheels Lug-centric not Hub-centric. (They need an adapter to do that.)

Fuel filter is on the passenger side of the frame, near the torsion bar mount
