Axle shaft bent?

Ok, so i have a problem. a couple weekends ago here in CO we had a snow storm and i slid out and hit my rear driver side wheel hard against a curb. I stopped and checked everything out but everything seemed to be ok. Last week when i was driving home the guy behind me walked up to me at a stop light and told me my wheel was wobbling. so i pull into a parking lot and checked it out. when i jacked it up i didn't notice anything loose or the wheel swaying but sure enough when i drove it the wheel was wobbling a couple inches. I got it back to my house and pulled the the axel thinking the bearing or something would obviously be wrong but nothing looked damaged on the inside.

So what Im guessing happened is that i bent it real close to the bearing.
Does this make sense?

The dealer wants $150 just to press the bearing off and check it out.and if it is the shaft they want $407 for one of those

another option is that i take the chance of going with a scrap yard axle that already has the bearing pessed on with the breaks and all for $100

any advice?

Front or Rear? What year? Are you sure its the "axle" and not the rim thats bent . Couple of things to check. You can swap rims from side to side and see if the wobble changes sides, [then its the rim, lest expensive of the two evils]. While you have the tire/rim off, check the axle run-out on the edge of it and the face of the axle to see how bad it is. Should be almost "0", any more than a "couple of thou" and its time to find another axle. Good luck, hope its just the rim.

yea sorry I forgot to mention that I put the spare on and it still was wobbling the same. And everything else on the axle is looking fine. It is the rear driverside

Unless anyone else has any input Im starting to think it is just worth going to the dealership and have some peace of mind.

Ouch. That's not good. I'd start looking for a differant axle, and change out the bearing/seal on that side also. Just make sure the $100 one is straight before you put it in.

Good luck. 1eye.

Jarboarder1,

Is or was this problem at certain speeds? If so, what speeds? Conintuous?

If corrected, what did you do to get it corrected.

My truck I bought used and have a similar problem with the LR. I have a vibration that I feel in my seat that could be the tire/rim/axle/???? and it causes the bed shake (I think). I have had road force test done, several balances, rotates, and the spare. Mine is between 50-58 and it also causes a bed shake. My truck has been looked at by the dealer and a Tires Plus for a total of 3 times and Toyota tells me the tires and Tires Plus says it isn't the tires. I am not sure what to do myself.

I am curious what you found out.

Thanks,

Ed
