Anyone tow a race car?

I'm thinking about picking up a spec miata for track and autox duty and will tow it w/ my 01 4runner.

Alum trailer is 1500lbs and car is 2200 ish full race spec.

Anyone tow this type of setup any distance?

I TOWED A 22FT 2500LBS STEEL DUAL AXLE WITH A 99 VW JETTA WITH A 3.0 (210677 MILES 5 SPEED) FOR ABOUT 80 MILES HILLS KILLED BUT AS LONG AS YOU START SLOW AND BUILD TO A STEADY 60 MPH I DON'T SEE YOU HAVING ANY ISSUES WITH THAT LITTLE BIT OF WEIGHT

I would be concerned about it being able to stop that weight when coming down any sort of decline...

I tow a 1985 Toyota MR2 racer about 20 miles to the track every weekend, coupled to a 14ft tandem axle trailer. And I have a 1986 4Runner. I think your 4runner will be ok lol.

Just be sure to leave lots of distance between you and cars, as the extra weight will greatly extend your braking distance.

I used to tow an Audi 5000 turbo quattro open-class rallycar on an Imperial tandem-axle aluminum trailer. Usual tow to races was around 500miles. I swapped out to a trailer brake controller (time based) and everything worked fine. I also had installed the Napa air-shocks on the rear and would run those at 225psi after the car was loaded on for a good ride leveling.

Total miles towed was lots. Before I was done I had added the SuperCharger and changed out to the Tundra front brakes because the stocks were shot. The rig towed fine. I later had to use a steel trailer (more weight) and for that I used a load equalizing hitch and would run about 175psi in the rear shocks.

I would say over time the only bad thing it did to the truck was torque the body shell soe that I now hear interior pannels shifting when going over road-surface changes. I attribute that to the load that was placed and the miles & speed of tow.

Also when going to rallies the race car and truck were jam packed full of gear, tools and other support stuff for the race itself. I always figured I was over max tow rating - but the vehicle NEVER felt out of control or over-burdened except once. That was when a locating strap failed, then the come-allong lock broke resulting in the car rolling to the back of the trailer to the limit of the oh-crap chain... This sudden weight change happened at a very bad spot in the road and the whole rear end got WAY too light resulting in bad steering control.

The root cause was the locating strap was cut by an exhaust piece that abbraided the strap over a distance. After that I switched out to a 4-axelstrap setup specifically designed to due what I needed. Never had a problem after that.
