There are many sites on this. Put it in Google or something. Header and cam are the most common.

Check out places like LCEngineering.com for ideas what you can do.
You can get around 200hp out of the 22r if you really want to go crazy.
Bigger cam, bigger/more carb(s), ported head, bigger valves and bigger pistons seem to be the main steps to take.
I'd have to hunt around, but I think you can do a one time shot of 95mm pistons on the 22r. When it died, it would be good and dead, but it'd be a kick in the pants in the meantime LOL!

you can go well over the 200 mark if you turbo it

as for the carb, a good place to look is carbs.net. if your timing chain has never been replaced it might be a good idea to rebuild, but these engines will go on well past 200k(mine has 312,000 miles) so it's probably not a big deal

Basics are an intake and header and exhaust. 15 more hp but it's all good, it's in the driveability range. Next up is a cam. Nuther 20hp. Feels pretty good at that hp. Then I remember hearing 20R heads (they breather better) and some porting. Brings you to about 150 hp. Then a new manifold and Webers. 170. Somewhere along the line you need to upgrade your cooling system. Then a big bore kit (LC punches these out to 2.8 liters!) and now you should be at 200hp! For only about two to three times as much money as a small block conversion....

One thing I did just in the meanwhile is dropped in a taller airfilter (you can click the link in my sig for more info there). Total cost was maybe $12, and it has a little more low end grunt and power, not much, but it adds to it. Also, it makes it sound pretty sweet when you mash the throttle. The exhaust didn't seem to do too much, maybe a little more power, sounds like a V6, but still has the power of a lawn mower.

A 22r needs something. Just throw in a 327.

my bone stock 22R powered 2wd was one of the the quickest little trucks where i lived.

Install a Cold Air Intake. Remove the filter and duct tape a gas-powered leaf blower to the pipe....

The 351 is to big. If you want a Ford, go with a 289. Its great for a small car or truck. It just cost to mush to make it fast. Thats why I would go with the 327. 4" bore and it fast with little money.

one of those next gen all aluminum toyota 4.0 v6 engines from a taco could be a nice swap in the future. available with a 6 speed and all, only problem would be you'd lose the simplicity of the 22R because of the wiring and fuel injection components

and i agree, a 351 is way too big. a built 22R works great in these trucks, the biggest i'd ever want to go would be to something like a 5M or 7M

The 22r is simple , your right. But a small V8 would be hell on wheels.

I did not see anything on your sig about the taller air filter. Could you point me in the right direction?

Thanks

Sorry, I recently removed that from my sig, like 2 weeks ago in fact, as my truck is now for sale, and it looks more professional with the closed filter box, and then I can say it has a K&N. Basically you either stack two air filters, or find a filter of equal diameter to the one you have in it, or there abouts that is taller, then use a coupling nut and some threaded rod, or a bolt to extend your carb stud up, then you place the top cover onto the filter and bolt it down. There is a oil line of some kind, basically takes the blow back and that feeds up into the top part of the air filter. I used a T junction and some tubing I found in the back of checkers (free, because it was already cut) and capped off the 3rd part of the T to extend this line.
