Has anyone used an oil extractor like the Pela 6000?





They are supposed to 'suck' the oil from your dipstick hole instead of draining it out from your drain plug. It seems like an easy to a home oil change without a lift, ramps, or jackstands (assuming that your oil filter is accessible from the top).

Do these things actually work well?

It would work except it would be a pita to make sure you get all the oil out, and it would be extremely slow because of the size of the dipstick tube. I've used a similar one, but much smaller, to extract oil samples for testing.

Its the same as the pumps they use for closed system automatic transmissions. I know its alot more of a pain than jacking up one side and gettin on the creeper.

how low is your 2000?......just slide underneath and pop the bolt out to drain it. Before I put any lift on mine it still seemed like I had more than enough room to work under there.

Probably because they run body kits which leaves them with less than an inch of clearance

The oil filter housing is in the engine bay, right up on top at least on e46's, not sure about others. Anyway it makes the oil extractor very practical. I think some VWs have the same setup.

The new V6 4RUnner and Tacoma is a perfect candidate for this too. Now crawling required for an oil change.

I haven't used one. BUT - I've watched the oil butler use one. Oil Butler is a company that does mobile oil changes. Using that thing eliminates the mess and need for jacks etc. Worked well for them. but i didn't watch them clean it up etc.

Extractors are used for almost all inboard marine engines because the drain plugs are inaccessible. They work OK but they do leave some oil behind. Depending on how picky you are it really isn't a problem, and they are so much cleaner than any other method. You do still have to get to the filter, which for marine engines usually dumps oil all over the place and negates the clean part of the job.
If you want to buy one look at the marine stores and they will have a bunch of options, I use a Tempo model that works very well.

I ran a boat maintenance business for a while. We had fancy ones that could pull and hold up to 30 qts of oil with a single charge. I was looking for some pics, cant find them.

I use the one from Griots Garage, works great. Removes full published capacity (about 5L in my case). I've never removed the oil plug ever, it's the original since I bought mine new. Filter is next to the battery so oil changes are a snap.

You might as well just use the drain plug... It's easy as heck... You should be able to fit under the Runner without lifting it or anything and you still need to get under the sucker to get the oil filter out.

My prev BMW's were all pretty low to the ground... I still lifted the sucker up to change the oil... But for a BMW, it may be worthwhile since you have to remove the pos lower engine cover thing just to access the drain plug. Also BMW oil filters are on top right next to the engive cover...
