Annoying cruise control problem

After this last road trip i've had enough, I really want to figure out the culprit behind this. I'm almost always setting my cruise at 79 for highways and this problem has been there for the entirety. Now it mostly happens when i reach an incline and cruise needs to compensate so it pushes the pedal, so to speak. anyways, there's a certain spot, i don't know when or how or what exactly ignites it, but the rpms will jump from 1-2k to exactly 3500 rpm, every single time. after a couple of seconds it'll calm down 100-200rpms then maybe 30 seconds later or so it'll lunge into the next gear, at least i think that's what it's doing. if i tap the brakes to disengage while it's in the middle of its 3500 fit the reaction is pretty violent. anyways, i really have nothing else to help diagnose it, if i think of anything i'll chime back in. thanks guys

Sounds like the tranny is downshifting to maintain the speed you have set on cruise. I'd be willing to bet that it got worse after the larger tires went on.

When I had my 02 dbl cab and it was stock cruise was fine. but after I lifted it and put 305's on it I had the same problem you are having. It's just the extra resistance from your tires.
If you say it was like that stock though maybe you are just trying to use your cruise at too fast of speed maybe??

I had a camry like this once, turned out the shifting solenoid was bad in the trans.

sorry to sound like an idiot but could you give me some more detail on that solenoid? i'm set for an appointment at the dealership for the rear suspension bumpstop recall so maybe i'll just ask them to check it out while it's there...i'd rather be as specific as possible though...the broader i am, the more room it leaves for them to invent problems

My CEL is on for "shift solenoid E malfuntion" I think it is a p0773. My cruise is fine at 85 all day long, it only downshifts up an incline with the deckplate closed. With it open, it won't downshift it unless there is a trailer. I am running stick 265/75.

next time it does it turn off o/d as soon as it down shifts and wait until you get over the incline to kick it back into 4th. I have a similar problem and I think it's because of not enough power and the cruise reaction is too slow. I also find if i give the cruise a little boost with my foot before starting the incline, i'll get over the hill without a down shift. I'm seriously considering a re-gear to get the highway rpms up a little higher in the power curve. I'm thinking 150k miles may be too many to add a s/c.
