Amsoil oil analysis questions
1) Can anyone have the analysis done by buying the kit and sending it in, or are there more costs involved.
2) What are the benefits and reasons behind doing an oil analysis
thanks

Generally speaking, a single used oil analysis isn't terribly useful. If there's something very wrong with your engine, a single report report will show abnormally high levels of wear metals, antifreeze, etc., but by then you're already in trouble. If you're very particular about your maintenance, though, regular analysis of your oil can be invaluable. The reason you want to do them regularly is so you can spot trends and head off problems before they become serious. Also, if you're running a synthetic, you can safely extend your drain intervals by regularly sampling. One particularly annoying down side to oil analysis is that it isn't really known how accurate the tests are. I've heard of people sending two samples of the same oil to two different labs (even to the same lab) at the same time and getting different results. Overall though, the people I know that use oil analysis are happy with the results they get. I'm not doing them yet, but I intend to start on my next oil change.
