About 3 months ago i put in amsoil long lasting synthetic, the 12 mo. 12000 mi stuff. But it has only been three months and its already looking very dirty. is this normal? i have an amsoil oil filter in there as well. any input would be great, thanks.

oil color is not a measure of longevity, effectiveness, etc. thats all you need to know. the only way to truly tell is to get it analyzed

Any brand of oil can look dirty by the next day but it all depends on what you think "looks dirty". When was the last time that an oil change was done before putting in Amsoil?
You should have "flushed out" your engine first with regular cheaper oil (5-30 min) and then use the Amsoil. Did you do that?

i was reading a lab report on mobil 1 that was run in a camaro. ...it didn't start loosing it's lubricating properties and breaking down until about 18k miles. ....however, i wouldn't go that long without a change. ...3 months is as long as i would push it due to contaminants that it picks up over time.

Great site.

However, oil has many functions, one of which is to clean up your engine with detergents and then keep the dirt in suspension in the bulk oil. The bigger stuff ends up in the filter, the rest keeps on circulating until you change it. The difference between a good oil and a great oil is how ell it does its job with all the dirt suspended in it.

So, in effective, a dirty oil is doing its job.

However, either change every 3k or get analysis is you want to go longer.

You are also supposed to use the engine flush from Amsoil before running synthetic

I didn't know about the engine flush first. Oops. So are you saying in should flush it and replace it now? It has been about 3k mi, but that's only a quarter of what it says to go. Where can i go to get a reliable analysis? thanks for all your help.

you can send it to amsoil if you want, but check price. it may be a lot cheaper to just change oil and filter now.
any high detergent oil will show the dirt, it cleans. as you didn't flush first, i'd dump filter and oil in the next thou and figure it's the same as a flush. then run the normal projected distance. i change the filter about half way through the oil life. but i also run the 25,000 mi stuff and will dump it ahead of that time. and all of this depends on how hard you run the truck, and in what conditions.

Kinda like Java said. Dump the oil (and filter), use the amsoil flush. drop in new amsoil oil & filter.

I did the oil analysis through Amsoil, which takes the new amsoil you'll use after a year of running with it (or half a year if you want).

How do I do it? Amsoil oil (25k miles stuff) and replace it twice a year, or every six months. Replace the filter also. I can, and have, gone an entire year, but twice a year doesn't hurt.
