I was reading a past thread about the Amsoil engine cleaner. At least that what I think I was reading about.

Anyway, has anybody used it? and would you reccomend it.
I have an 88' 3.0 with about 225,000 miles on it. I was thinking about doing the engine cleaner, then switching to synthetic oils.
What you all think.
and what is your opinions about the best synthetic oil for my rig, and maybe even the best filter.

I would think twice about using an engine cleaner with that many miles. It might loosen up too much stuff and cause an automotive version of a stroke.

Just keep putting in dino in-its only lasted 225,000 miles, so it must be working ok.

As far as filter concerns the toyota stock filter is pretty good and at the dealer for under $5.

I put redline fluids in front and rear diffs/tranny/transfer. Just started using Mobile 1 as my engine oil. I have a k&n filter (have had it for the past 8 months), but now with the posts about how k&n doesn't do its job makes me wonder :\

check into amsoil for air filter - lots on here seem to recommend it.

I put Redline total engine cleaner in my dad's 83 Dodge Ram van without him knowing it.
I got a call from him the next week, after he drove it the 1st time after I had it, and he asked what I did to the engine 'cause it was running SO much smoother.

That sold me.

I was wondering about the engine cleaner loosening up too much in my old engine. Heck, it may be the sludge that is keeping all of the oil in there now!
Anyone use the engine cleaner on an old engine?

I have heard really good things about redline products. I used the injector cleaner last time I filled up, and it seemed to run smoother after that. I may just stay with redline, but I also hear Amsoil is great too.

Any opinions?

I have "broke" 2 tranny's after using Redline MTL. Just a heads up. I will never use their oil again.

I have used the engine cleaner but that was when the truck was very young. I'd have to go with everyone else on not doing it with all those miles you have. The old adage of all the little crap in there (engine oil & coolant liquid) that plugs up the little leaks. Flush, or clean, them out and you just bought yourself a bunch of brand new problems.

I'd say only if you were going to tear down and re-build.

So...should you use the engine flush on a VERY young (5k miles) engine before switching to Amsoil?

Toyota rebuilt mine afer 25K using MTL. Amsoil in everything now.

I must say that I do use their fuel injector cleaner, good stuff.

I don't see the need to do that. It's compatable with other oils.

yup, did my research before and read your comments in another post about redline. figured if there were serious problems with redline, the 4x4 store/service center would of gotten rid of it a long time ago. can't remember exactly, but thought I read something that said about "don't have them flush your system", which leads to alot of problems. the 4x4 store said they would never flush anything on a vehicle......

For the record I went to Amsoil in the trans and rear diff and its awesome!

BTW, the previous vehicles that I broke the tranny on were a Mazda and a Honda, respectively.

Using an engine flush prior to changing over to a synthetic isn't necessary but if you have an older engine and want to flush it for whatever reason, I'd recommend using CFL oil which is manufactured by Lubriplate. I won't say it's the best on the market but it's the best I've ever used to "puke" an engine.
