Talking Am I Missing Anything?

Plan on doing the big cam swap next weekend. Here's what I'm getting:

engbldr 268C cam
Steel Guide Timing Set
Fel-Pro Head Set
New Head Bolts
New Exhaust Studs (mine are a little crusty)

I was going to have the local machine shop give the heads a valve job, install the new valve guides, and give it a good checking.

Is there anything else I'm missing? Now probably next month I was going to do the exhaust, get a set of headers and probably 2.25 or 2.5 inch with a high flow muffler and cat. But that's a little down the road.

Also once I do this swap will I need to adjust my airflow sensor? I have my box gutted and a K&N flat filter in there now.

I just figured if I got the Fel-Pro Head Set,it would come with everything. Since I'm gonna pull the head and take it to a machine shop. The head-set would come with intake and exhaust gaskets, head gasket, valve cover, timing cover, distributor o-ring. I mean it'll come with every gasket that I'm going to tear apart during disassembly.

Does Toyota sell a Head-Set? Although if they do, I'd hate to see what stealership prices are

If yo have time i would just send your head to engbldr and have them do it, I got mine done and had it back within a week with o/s valves all for under $400. but won't work if you are trying for a one day turn around type thing.
Fel-pro is alright, that is what i used, but can't say how well it worked cause i only had a few months on them when the bottom end went bad.

Ya, i didn;t intend on having my valves replaced. never had anyproblems with oil consumption or anything. I was just going to have the machine shop put in the new valve guides and freshen up the seats and grinds on the valves, but not replace any of them unless they were trashed. (which I don't think should be a problem)

Cool, What kind of stud are you looking at? Have you thought about bolts instead?
Other than that i think you got everything covered, as long as you got all the right tools. Good luck and let us know how it goes.

You know, since you're dropping the larger cam in there, the very least that you should do to the valves, other than what you've mentioned already since you're not going to replace them, is replace the springs with some heavier duty ones to kick the valves right back when the cam's lobes pushes them off.

There were some exhaust studs on LC Engineerings pages. I'm assuming they're ARP's or somebody like that. They were like $30.00. Because from the looks of mine, I'll probably have to heat them up to get the old nuts off. And I want to do headers in about a month or so. So this way the fasteners will all be new come apart again without too much trouble.

My other big debate is whether to pull the motor and do this on the stand or if I should just do it in the truck. I think I might start a poll to see what everyone thinks.

Since you're doing headers, I'd do them in the truck so that you could see what all alterations that you'd need to do to make them fit properly, if that be the case.

Some would say that it's better to mount the headers out of the vehicle, but you can imagine just how aggravating that it would be to get them all mounted up an dsecure only to have the engine not fit back in it's place because the header's are catching somewhere.

I'll bet that if you try a Search for "headers", you'll find all sorts of input on the subject.

I;m not going to do the headers with the motor out of the truck. You'd have to be insane to try and put the motor in with the header hanging off the side.

I'm talking about whether or not to pull the motor to do the cam.

Thanks for the clarification or excuse my misunderstanding..., leave the engine inthe truck for the cam install.

There's no real need to pull it out and you'll be saving yourself alot of needless headache, hardship and work.

Okay so I ended up getting the head-set from engnbldr. I ran the truck on the dyno pre-mods, 86hp and 116 ft/lbs. The graph was impressive, starting off at 1400 rpm it made 110 ft/lbs and stayed flat until it maxed at 4400 at 116. I've never seen such a flat plateau of a power curve.

This weekend is the big build-up. Parts are all in. And then I'll have to see what improvements were made on the dyno.
