Alternator Power on 2000 Tacoma w/3.4

Hey Guys and Gals,

I'm thinking about adding an accessory battery to my Tacoma. I know I need a battery isolator and know a guys how has an extra 90 amp alternator he is willing to part with for cheap. I'm assuming the stock alternator on the Toys is less than 90 amps and this isolator will work. Anybody know for sure?

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I assume that you meant that you know a guy selling a 90 amp isolator? Can you tell us what brand and type? (model number would help). If the isolator is compatible with the Tacoma charging system, then it should work. The FSM indicates that the alternator for the ' 99 Taco is 80 amp. I assume it's the same for a ' 00 model.

Oops, sorry, yes, I meant to say I know a guys selling an extra isolator. I really don't know what brand or model it is but I can find out. I really didn't think it mattered. I assumed that if it is rated for 90 amp and the taco puts out less than that then things will be fine. I'm not to bright with electrical things (pun intended) so can somebody please explain this compatability issue?

Thanks,

Jeff

Well, for example, a very popular brand of isolator - SurePower, has some info regarding installation on different vehicles here. I believe you need the Type 2 SurePower isolator which has the provision for a sense line that needs to be hooked up to your alternator. I don't think the Type 1 isolator will work with a Tacoma/4Runner.
