Alright, Here we go again. Cat' removal

I was wondering on any thoughts about removing the catalytic converter from my 88'. I was wondering if I would get the same power as a high flow cat system? and if there would have to be any other mods to make it run right.

From an environmental standpoint, what are peoples feeling on this mod?

I read somewhere that a guy had taken off his cat, and it still passed emissions. Anyone else see that? Or was he just saying that to cover his own guilt?

I've done it before and my advice is...........DON'T DO IT!!!!! it's not worth it. Your whole back will start to have black stains from all the unburnt fuel and the smell.......*gag* your torque will suffer, mild gains on top end....that's all i have to say about that

Yea i was a ricer before in my 92 prelude with all the annoying mods(lowered, intake, exhaust, etc..) i tell ya, ladies did not like the smell nor myself

Yeah, I ripped the cat out of my old 94 2wd toy prerunner. Besides a very slight gain in speed/ response it made my flowmaster sound like a chainsaw and much needed backpressure was gone. As far as the envirMENTAList are concerned it's like killing a Blue Whale or something...:pat:

I was running my '95 4Runner w/o a cat after I put headers w/ a 2.5" exh & a Flow Master on it. I now have a high flow cat & am much happier w/ it. It seems to run better & is a lot quieter.

I'm not a tree hugger in any way, but taking off you cat is something that just shouldn't be done. People complain about emission standards right now, well it's people who take their cats off that cause them to be that way. I though about doing it at one point, but the downfall outweighs the benifits by far.

Well, these engines are designed to work with thr cat on, so it stands to reason that they will not always run thier best with it off. Especially in the question of backpressure for torque.
after reading peoples reaction tot he power question. I am pretty sure I will keep mine on, and just save up for a high flow cat.

Go with a high flow cat. I put on a Downey header and exhaust with a high flow cat. You can definitely feel the improved performance.
