Hi, tonight my friend backed into my car! Oh no, right? There's a dent on the front bumper, but also whenever I turn right, it makes this awful sound like metal being dragged across the asphalt. However when I get under it with a flashlight, I can't see anything wrong. Although it sounds like something dragging on the ground, I can't see anything that would drag. Also, the faster im turning, the louder the sound. Anyone know what this could be? Thanks

Sounds like you just "broke in" the steering stops. No big deal.

11. My 2nd gen 4Runner/Truck makes a loud popping/grinding noise when I make a sharp turn. What is this noise?

Don't worry, most of the time this noise is just the steering stops rubbing on each other. Normally there is a plastic cap covering the metal preventing this noise.
However, these quickly wear away and fall off. You can get replacement caps for a couple bucks at the dealer, but most people just grease the metal stops, or live with it.

btw, my 4runner makes the same noise you described when i turn full-lock...but i don't really care since i know it's nothing to worry about.

unfortunately, it's not the steering stops. I greased them up good today and still the noise is there just as loud as before

also, i cant see a DAMN thing wrong with it. I know it has to do with when my friend hit it though, he hit it in the front and it must have damaged something. It sounds like metal dragging on the ground and happens only going on RIGHT turns. The harder the turn, the more noise. It sounds like it's coming from the driver's side. What kind of things could be damaged from getting ripped in the front of the car? It wasn't that hard, only enough to dent my bumper, but that noise is hideous. Really.

I got all 4 on the front. I'm assuming the back wheels don't have any cause they don't turn?

It sounds like the bumper ids hitting the tire. Did the bumper get bent back? These toyotas have the weakest bumpers I have ever seen. I had a 5mph impact with a tree and it nearly put the bumper into my tire.

Go into an empty parking lot and do a few sharp right hand turns , then look at your tire if it is rubbing you'll see the mark left on the tire or worse the frame.

The bumper did get bent a little but I don't think it's enough to hit the tire. It did impale itself onto the little metal bumper that sticks out behind the bumper cover. Maybe that could have something to do with it?

Take it out for a spin and drive in a right hand circle. Reason is, the suspension is going to compress in the turn and bring the bumper down and the tire is going to be turned out putting the rubber forward. Look at the top of the tread and see if there is a scrape mark on the inside of your tread.

I have a similar problem with my dropped 2KCivc Si, my right fender only rubs when I make a hard left (wich brings the right side down) everything looks fine when it is in the driveway.
