aftermath of getting broken into

Well a few weeks ago I got broken into, luckily I have an alarm so nothing was stolen. But they did break my window to unlock this door.

The window circled in red is the one they busted, so nice of them. So today I figured it was about time to get it fixed. I go to glasspro, and the lady quotes me $700-$800 for the window! She was like yeah those Toyota parts are expensive. I'm calling BS on this one. I just laughed when I heard the quote and said I would go elsewhere for a second opinion. Does this price seem right?

I don't know how much that specific window costs, but I know people who have had the small corner windows broken out of their vehicles and they ended up being $500 or so. Those are ussually to most expensive windows on the vehicle.
Your insurance doesn't cover it?

Yeah I think it will, I just don't want too many claims on my insurance. I'm low enough on the cash as it is.

Not that it really relates, But my mazda 323 had that same window broken twice by people trying to break in. $35 at the junkyard, about an hour to clean it up and replace it.

[rant] You are right about not claiming it, but I have a real problem with how insurance works. I carry a huge deductible on everything, because I know I'll never claim anything less than a few grand since they'll get back whatever I claim plus I'll probably become un-insurable. [\rant]

Depending on your deductible, you might not want to claim anyway. If your deductible is $500, and the part is $700, it's not worth it because th insurance will only cover $200. It'll be an ocurence and you'll have to shell out $500 out of pocket. Just take this hit and save the insurance for other things, unless you have a low deductible. Sorry about the break in. Also, that quote seems way high, especially since you could probably get a front winshield for less than half the price.

She is jacking you around man. My wrecking yard sells those glass pieces for $125. It is a lot of labor to install it, but $700? Cmon!!!

Hey Jethro, I have one of these windows sitting in my garage, I sent you a PM a few days ago about it, just checking to see if you still need one of them.

Aren't you from South Carolina? Me too. In SC there is no deductible on "safety" glass and it doesn't go against you on your insurance. I don't know if that qualifies as "safety" glass or not. I have had 2 windshields replaced for free over the last couple of years. I just called my wife that works at State Farm. She said as long as you have comprehensive coverage the insurance will pay 100% with no deductible.

I had a Ford Explorer that got the same window busted out a few years back. I went to a local body shop and they were able to get me a replacement window out of a wrecked explorer. I save several hundred bucks going this route.
Just talk to a body shop and I bet they will be able to work something out with you

Same thing happened to me. Same window, same side, and the alarm scared the bugger off. They didn't actually break the window and just popped it out, so I was able to fix it myself.

Because the glass was not broken, my zero-deductable glass insurance wouldn't apply. Auto shops didn't what to touch it because the insurance reimburesement for them was pretty minimal.

Replacing it is pretty easy - you just have to remove the door panel, window, and molding. Save some $$ and insurance hassle and replace it yourself.

The cheap way to go would be using a used glass and have a shop installed it for around $50 at most. Call your local junk yard or used part stores.

Good luck,

Go for junkyard and look for one man. Normally they are pretty cheap. The installation is pretty easy too, it is just a bit time consuming. Good luck!!!

I had a stereo stolen once and was was if'y about making a claim through insurance... didn't want my premium to go up either. So we just asked the insurance company and they said the premium wouldn't go up. So I got the money to replace the stereo and premiums stayed the same. They might act differently between a stereo and window, but it might be worth it to just ask what making a claim will do.

My brother works for an autoglass place and they get PPG windshields for under $70 but they end up charging a couple hundred to the public since most insurance pays for it but I can't see how much a little window costs;I'll ask my bro if that's correct.

ok this is a no fault claim. Your insurance will not go up. You do have to check how much your deductible is for a no fault claim. Typically its less then that of a regular claim. With that said $700 is way too high. This about a $250-300 job. Check with you ri insurance how much they estimate it at. Most insurance companies already have contracts with glass guys, so they will know the cost to repair right away. Get the money and fix it yourself and pocket the labor cost.

Sorry to hear about the break in...my Taco got broken into a year ago so I feel your pain. The repairs cost me more than the stereo they unsuccessfully tried to steal was worth.

You might just ask your insurance agent what the process would be if you wanted to file a claim. You can tell them the situation without actually filing a claim. It might help you evaluate your options better.
