aftermarket carbs?

i have an 84 truck w 22r and i have been looking at aftermarket carbs; I was wondering if anyone here has had experience with them. I have seen weber carbs that are somewhat bigger than stock: 35 or 38 mm, and I have seen holley carbs - 350 or 500 cfm, and side draft carbs that are very large - 45 and 48 mm. I am just curious what kind of power, mileage, and reliability you can get from these carbs.

they are jsut as reliable as the stock one, however you must realize they will require more tuning to run optimally, the stock one was already tuned by toyota for that....

I used to run a 38mm Weber before converting over to EFI. It ran great on the street and actually increased power and gas mileage. My only complaints are that it didn't work too well off road and cold weather drivability. As for reliability, they're notorious for vacuum leaks around the base plate adapters. Lets just say I got really good at cutting out my own gaskets for the adapters.

i love my weber, hate the adapter. you can get an offenhauser manifold that's set up for a weber carb already though, try offyparts.com

on the new 22R i'm building, i'm going to try using a stripped down stock carb, if that doesn't work out i'm gonna give a holley 350 a shot, as it seems to be a compromise between the 32/36(325CFM?) and the 38(390CFM?)

Just did a search and this was the only thread I could come up with about the Offy+Weber on a 22R other than a wanted listing.

The new to me 4Runner has an Offy with a 32/36 Weber. I hate to admit it but I didnt notice when I bought the truck :pat: But today did an oil change and such and said "Hey, thats and Offenhauser!"

Does anybody know much about this combo? I dont plan to toss it, just curious where the biggest gain is with this Low or Mid range? I know that this truck is SLOW and could use a bit more power, but the biggest thing is getting it jetted down for my elevation (7500ft).

from what i hear the offy manifold doesn't really sport a huge performance gain, but it's nice to have something that the weber bolts to and gets rid of the crummy weber adapter.

if the weber is stock the jets are probably too lean. that's what causes a lot of bad impressions of the weber on our trucks. however since you're at 7,000 feet you're going to want to go leaner than somebody at sea level since the air is thinner.

i'd invest in an 02 sensor and digital A/F meter, that way you can determine if you're running lean or rich...

Synchronising the side drafts is a MAJOR PITA! Unless you are looking for the ultimate in power, I would go with a downdraft.

Back when TRD had a real catalog and sold product, I called them with this question, and they recommended the 32/36 for a stock truck - they said the 38 was too much for real street use. I had it on my 22R with the Weber adapter and loved it. Never had a problem, and there was a noticable performance increase, especially with the headers. A flat screwdriver and a timing light is all you need to tune it up!

Electric choke IIRC

i wouldn't recommend dual side drafts on a DD -- too much tinkering necessary. however there is a single side draft manifold out there that sounds like a good idea.
