**add To Manual Hub Swap**
i have done some searching. just cant find all the great info i know is out there.
if someone has done this or knows of a link that would help me a lot. pics are worth a thousands words.
also manual hub choice or where to order the right parts would be a big help to me and others in the future.
i am doing this to save the cv's for longer use....just makes sense?!?!

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but unless you want to spend a ton of money, there isn't a cheap way to install manual hubs on a 98. Now anything can be done with time and money but it ain't gonna be cheap. The drive flanges on your 98 have the same set up as a car. The Cv's are splined into the drive flange. The cheapest and easiest way I see to get you manual hubs up front is to look for a Taco in a wrecking yard and get the spindles, brakes, rotors and hubs as a whole assembly and transfer it into your rig......Good Luck!

this is nothing new for people to do, a lot of guys have done it, a lot on ttora have done it
I am doing it to save cv angles and when i break i can just disconnect it and drive to a nice place to change it.

Its a simple swap too, takes an hour or 2 (minus changing diff tube), just unbolt LCA, unbolt CV, Unbolt UCA, take it all off, pull out cv's, then reinstall it all.
I just need to put new wheel bearings in mine before i install them.

Downey's price isn't too bad. It is all new components. I'm wondering why the 4Runner kit with hubs is almost $100 more than the kit for the Tacoma. Aren't they the same axle?

You use the same rotors you just took off of yours, the tacoma rotors are usually gonna be smaller than the 4runners.
But you have to get all your stuff pressed out, and have the new stuff pressed in which can be expensive if you can't find the right shop. toyota wants 300ish bucks to press in wheel bearings, just for labor, and thats me bring in the spindles. local gear and fab shop that i trust (and set up my locker) wants 40-80.
I dunno why it would be 100 bucks more....maybe abs? another downside is that they aren't Aisin hubs, but warn.

YOU will use your stock rotors. Everything else has gotta go. The cheapest way is all junk yard parts. I bought all new parts (less the Aisin Hubs) It is spendy as hell I forget (conveniently) how much mine cost to do. But I had it done with gears a front locker and rear LSD. So it was really expensive! Here another kit

Sonoran steel also has some info as he did his forever ago. Looking back I wish I had forgot this idea put in a ARB air locker in the front and not fooled with the other crap. I have an evil hub fairy that keeps destroying my inner needle bearing races. If you have nay more questions shoot em over I'll answer here or PM. The ARB would have been less money in the long run and just as simple.

thank you all for the great replies with lots of info. i think i will wait a while on this swap and see how crolison swap goes in the future.
i found both inner cv boots torn today after a light wheeling a few days ago. they did leak after the lift but thought the angle looked good. now they are both torn in the same spot on each side. time for a diff drop!?!?
**QUESTION** do i just replace the boots for now or replace the complete cv on both sides. boot kit $25 / new cv complete $69
i read a few threads on this...just thought i would get the help from those that have posted in this thread.

I hate swapping inner boots. Make sure you have the pliers or whatever tool is used to set those fancy rings that hold the boot on. If you can pull your wheel, take all four bolts for your lower ball joint, remove your cv, then you can replace the inner boots. I don't know how technically inclined you so I ask if you can do these things you are golden. pm for a list of tools you'll need.

well dude i have done the swap and i also did my lift at the same time and belive me it sux it took me 8 hours to the the swap and front lift the problem with jus using the junkyard parts and just putin them on is that u will loose ur abs and so what i did was to take and have the hubs pressed out of both the taco and my 4runner spindles and then u have to have the abs ring taken off the 4runner hub and put on the taco one but in order to do that u have to replace the inner and outer oil seals and the bearings and a snap ring on the inside of it and then replace the cv's as well. bearings are bout $70 each, oil seals are $15 outer and $10 inner, cv's bout $120 with a core, and then it is also good to change the gaskets on the hub itself and they r bout $20 for all of them, the shop i took mine to cost me bout $200 to have the bearings pressed in and out but i also had them replace the upper ball joint too so other wise if u dont do this u wont maintain abs

Thats why I just went ahead and bought the hubs in an effort to avoid having them pressed out then in again not to mention keeping the abs. It will take some time for sure.
