a343f torque converter question

So ive got a 90 series with a a343f auto transmission that was leaking oil like crazy and stopped working. So after a couple of months I bought a brand new a343f plus a new transfer case. BUT The transmission didnt have the torque converter with it. Now, My mechanic told me before this all happened that the torque converter was starting to show signs of wear.

Now, what happens when a torque converter shows signs of wear??
Would it be crazy to use the old torque converter with the new transmission?
Is it normal for torque converters to wear down? I assume so, how often do they need to be replaced??

Reason i'm asking is because I've spent a TON of money buying the new transmission (about 6500 bucks) and the torque converter alone is around 1200 bucks.

I'm posting this on these forums because e 90 series forums doesnt see much traffic!! I figure, as LC80s have a343f transmissions maybe you guys can help!

Any help is appreciated!!
