99? Tacoma Motor Identification Question
We have a motor we are thinking about using in a project. The guy we got it from said it is a 99 Tacoma 2RZ-FE. It is an 8 port we think about 1995 vintage. The serial number from the lower left side of the motor behind the alternator in a horizontal stamp is 2010743. The manual transmission with it is serial number 5030462.
Can anyone tell me what year it is?
I went to some of the on-line sources for Tacoma engine codes but couldn't find the answer. I did find a list of serial numbers starting with the year 2000 but none older. I noted that list shows a 6 digit number for the 2&3RZFE not the 7 digit I have.

Why do you think it's one of the earliest era (1995.5 - 1997) 2RZ's. Does it have a distributor (or an open distributor port on the side)? If it's not configured to use a distributor, it can't be older than the 1998 model year.
I've never seen a reference source on Tacoma engine serial numbers. As far as I know you'd have to contact Toyota to find out what year it was built.

In terms of the intake ports on the cylinder head, the 8-port design was used as late as the 2000 model year for non-California spec 2RZ and 3RZ engines. The design change to 4 larger intake ports was introduced for LEV ('California spec') engines with the 2000 model year.
If I'm not mistaken, Toyota went all 4-port with the 2RZ's as part of their 2000.5 mid-year adjustments. From 2000.5 or 2001 onward, all 2RZ's were 4-port with 4 coil packs.
If there's no distributor (or place for one), it can't be any earlier than a 1998 (assuming it's actually a Tacoma engine). If it's (a Tacoma engine with ...) 8-port and 2 coil packs it dates from 1998 to 2000.
If it's an engine from a non-Tacoma vehicle (or outside the USDM), I have no idea how to date it ...
