99 runner ........Dust entering vehicle

Hey guys,
You know that Faux grill cut into the side panel back on the drivers side next to the tailgate???
Is that actually letting air from the outside in??

I do alot of trail riding and my back area seems to collect alot more dust and dirt than the rest of the vehicle.
Anyone get the same thing ??
Thanks ,kenny S

No.............

The only time I drive with the window slightly open is on the highway.
It just looks like everything behind the rear seat is coated way more with
trail dust.
Are there any other intakes for air to the cabin??

Yes. When I had my '99 I took a trip into Eastern Oregon's back country and it's very dusty there. I was driving across a dry lake bed and there was a huge amount of dust coming in, but I wasn't sure where from as all the windows were up and I had the air cond. set to recirculate. I also noticed places on the door sills where dust was getting past the weather stripping.

Behind the rear bumper on the driver side quarter panel, an air escape flap exsists to help pressure escape when the doors shut etc. The flap is made of thin rubber and very delicate. I have found it pulled inward, possibly from negative pressure, and in the same situation with dust.

Thats got to be it!!

I can see a vent up under the drivers side quarter that looks like it connects
to the grill lines cut in the interior side panel.
That has to be the culprit because we had dust whafting into the car
this weekend from the rear of the vehicle while I was doing 25 MPH !

Now.........block it off or not?? I'm leaning towards stuffing it with a towel
or something. Thanks, Kenny

I too have the same problem. I do quite a bit of driving around in the desert and it never fails to have the interior fill with dust. I was thinking about pulling the rear interior panel and trying to fit an air filter there to see if it would solve the problem.
