Looks good Travis! I guess I never realized the newer consoles didn't have switches...

I just read Bob's write-up. Seems pretty expensive to do unless you get a used one. But I believe the benefit of having the good cupholder next to you will overcome the cost. I really hate my cup holder up on the dash. My drinks always sweat and drip down on the shifters.

He doesn't know it yet but next time I drive out to Az, I'm gonna make a stop in Cali and have Bob help me with the console mod and the fusebox/power inverter mod Shhh!!!

Thanks guys.

It really isn't too expensive, since you can move some parts over from your old console. I was lucky enough to find a complete 99+ console on ebay.

Travis,

Good work, my man! And yes, if you can find the parts over ebay, even better. I have a blue center console w/ the cupholder still in my garage. the non-rear heater kind. It needs the internal parts (2 cargo box-things). $50 + shipping.

Yeah Travis, definitely send the addt'l info to me. That would be great.

Looks great. All you need to do now is add a light for the rear heater at night.....

Good idea Jason. I am also thinking of installing a 12V power point inside the console box for my cell phone charger.

Humm I guess you could try to make a panel for the other buttons or cut a hole for one on the auto tranny shifter panel..

Another thing that crossed my mind is installing a 99+ center dash panel, but you would have to re-route your vents. The nice thing about those panel's is that they have the power window button and ect button in the place of our cupholder...

I barely had enough slack in the wiring for the ECT and back window, so I didn't have to do any additional wiring...

I will be getting a writeup as soon as I get my LSAT and finals done (2 weeks)

Guys,

I just got an email from a guy over the internet, he writes:

"I have a 98 4runner and did the console mods last weekend. Your direction were great. I have a few suggestions. I got my parts from the bone yard. I was able to get the console, e-brake handle, and all brackets. First, if your going to the trouble to track down a 99 console you might as well get the rear bracket and the e-brake handle. Doing so eliminates have to drill and tap the body. It all just bolts right in. All that was need to do was cut the extra plastic from the bottom of the console and move the switches to the dash."

So there you have it...he just took everything out and it bolted right in. Just needed to do a little plastic trimming.

I just love it when people improve on ideas!

Right on, so that makes 3 of us!!

BTW the cupholder got a lot of use from last weekend's road trip. Its so much better than those dash cupholders. No rattling, spilling and I could use the climate controls!!

So far, the people that I know for sure who have done this mod is:

Me
You
Dave Bui (dbui27)
Norm (the guy I quoted above)

There were 2 other guys who axed me a bunch of questions, but I dont know if they actually went thru w/ it.

Would this console fit into my '90 4Runner? I hate that in-dash cup holder?

I did this mod last weekend

Thanks to the great advice here. I bought all the parts e-brake/mount/console from a junkyard for $45 and it only took about 90 minutes to install. The trickiest thing was cutting the base and rerouting the switches! I love not spilling coffee everywhere!
