99 4runner - Transmission problem?

Just a question for you all...

Here is the history on my 99 4runner SR5 Auto. 150k miles

had a Po171 light that was cleared by changing the O2 sensors (which I did myself) anf the MAF sensor (which the dealership did cuz the screw was stripped).

After the change, I noticed a problem which I didn't think was related.

When I am going uphill at around 50-65 the truck sort of skips, like it is missing a gear. one of my freinds said it felt like the torque converter lock was slipping (Unsure of what this is). Another said i could need new plugs.

I noticed if I shut the overdrive off it seems to get rid of the skipping.

Drove to Vegas today, and the truck was really vibrating from 50 to 70 (didn't go past 70). The acceleration uphill is pathetic, it really vibrates w/ the OD on or off. I tried turning on the ECT but it didnt seem to do well.

I checked my tranny fluid level when cold, and it was way above normal, perhaps 4 to 5 inches aove the GOOD reading... even though I havent added and tranny fluid.

What do you all think? if I can provide and information please let me know. 1st time poster.

Thanks,

Jay

Jay -

Welcome. First of all, you mention that you changed the 02 sensors (plural). Why? The rear sensor is responsible for about 10% of the "sniffing," and rarely have we ever seen one go bad. That being said, what type of 02 sensor did you go with pre-cat? And post cat? Where did you get them from?

Let's start there since this problem started after you changed the sensors.

check your driveshaft to see if one of your U-joints are bad, if not try lubricating them. Sometimes the slip joint gets tight, which also can cause it to vibrate, but be careful not to over lube it, just add about 3 or 4 squirts with a grease gun...

Thanks for the response guys,

I changed out my factory O2 sensors with a pair of Bosch PNs: 13104 and 13095.

The reason I had canged them out was I was tryingto get the Check Engine Light P0171 to clear.

I changed both pre and post cat. I left them in there as a freind of mine said they probably needed to be changed anyways after 150k miles.

The ATF should be checked hot, in park, with the engine running. The cold check isn't very accuratre and if the engine isn't running it's way off. Also the level should be checked after running through all positions on the selector P R N D 2 L 2 D N R P.

I had this same problem on my 99 3.4 with 100k, I had the very same symptoms. my mechanic friend told me to change out the plug and wires. After it was a whole new vehicle. I went with the high end wires for car quest and single prong autolite platinum's.

A bit more on the problem...

I put the old O2 sensors back on, and I check the ATf as per the above specs. It was fine after I checked it, so Thanks for the proper checking method.

Took the truck out today and pinpointed when the vibration occurs.

it happens during acceleration.

Starting from 0, pressing the accelerator it stats to vibrate at about 25 MPH and gets a lot louder by 40 MPH. Tried OD and ECT On/Off. I accelearted to 45 MPH and let off the accelerator and the vibration stopped. So no shakes while coasting.

Pressing the pedal down to maintain 45 MPH I felt only a slight vibration, until I hit an incline. then it vibrated like mad again.

Thank you all for taking the time to reply.

Sounds like a driveshaft UJ is on its way out. Don't check it in place - disconnect the rear end and check the joint that way.
