just purchased a 98 4runner, 163,xxx miles 3.4. When I drove it home the brake pedal sank to the floor, I replaced the master cylinder, brake booster, and pads all around.


When I popped the drivers side drum off it was covered in brake fluid, replaced the brake wheel cylinder. Moved over to the passenger side, the drum would not come off. Went got 2 8x1.25 bolts to press the drum off. Replaced the shoes and springs. Went to place the drum back on and it requires a sledge hammer to put it back on. I have replace that wheel cylinder to see if it was stuck open any.


In trouble shooting I have removed the shoes completely and reinstalled. Had a friend who is a mechanic check everything out. The adjuster is completely in. Other than a shoe being out of spec I can not think of any other problems......


Any suggestions? Looking to get this truck up and running for my wife so I need it to be 100%

Did you try swapping drums to see if the other side slides right on?/

Are the drums the same size who knows what might have been thrown on

Big ridge on the inside of the drum?/

This was hard to remove even with the brakes adjusted all the way in??

Something is wrong no way should you need to beat a drum on.

put two new ones on I always do when replacing shoes.

Is the parking brake lever stuck open some?

When you replace shoes, you have to back off the adjuster quite a bit, so the drum can fit over the thicker linings. Back off just enough so you can slide/wiggle the drum on without a hammer.

Cheap after market shoes are sometimes made wrong. I've seen it hundreds of times on sienna vans. Check the old shoes to the new ones. If the drum doesn't slide on easily with the adjuster all the way in, there is an issue with the new shoes...

Oh, never use a hammer to install drums...try a long piece of mechanic cloth to sand the shoe surface just enough for the drum to slide on. If the drum doesn't spin with slight effort then it will lock up when you apply the brakes.
