My '98 4runner with manual tranmission seems to excessive slop in the gears when changing rather than a precise feel like I am use to in my '94 truck. Is this normal or can I correct? Thanks...

Depends what excessive means.

You'll find a number of threads with people trying to get rid of "notchy" shifting. You'll find threads with people talking about how to get smoother shifting. Excessive may mean there are underlying issues.

Options run from overfilling your manual tranny w/ aftermarket fluids to urd's short shifter kit. (think there's a replacement on the top of the gearbox that can be done as well)

try some redline mt90 awsome stuff worked great in my 91

That's the aftermarket stuff most use. I went with mobile1 fluid and didn't experience much improvement. I overfilled the gearbox via the standard fill port (jacked that side of the car up to get some extra fluid in the box). Looking forward I'll probably keep my eyes open for some MT90 and the bushing. Then I can drain my fluid, replace the bushing and overfill via top.

Though I'm really looking for an excuse to get the URD short shifter kit (http://www.urdusa.com)

There is a bushing at the shifter that goes bad on these trucks, it is a very cheap fix, but while you are there, you might as well change the fuild, if it hasnt been changed for a long time...here is a write-up,

mobil1 i think is too slippery since its GL5, which could cause the syncros not to sync.(i am not sure on the newer 5 speeds) but GL4 is recommended for the tranny's which mt90 is. for the transfercase however gl5 can be used
