98 4 runner 3.4ltr 4X4 alt problem?
my runner had low amp turn over on starting, slow like a low batt. the battery is only 1 year old, and i have noticed for a while some kind of low pitched whine while running. i only did 2 starts (slow turns) and then experienced the low batt clicking. right away i popped the hood and felt the alt which was very very hot. did the alt bearing go and should the alt be so hot so fast. it does remind me of chevy type prob long ago. it charges because the alt light does not go on once running which is right away. however i do not want to seize up and ruin my belt. lucky the wife made it to home driveway. any ideas before i swap alt out? thanks joe. sorry if i re-posted in diff cat.

How many amps is the alt putting out. Then I would take the accessory belt off and spin it (if you have felt a good one before) and see if you feel any excessive grinding or if it is harder to turn than normal

if i buy a rebuilt is it oem?
i am going to remove the belt and give the pulley a spin and see if there is friction. it seemed to get hot real quick. i don't know what the amp output is and feel that it may be real close to seizing. also if it is friction the fan belt has probably stretched as well. will check for cracks too. thanks will post back.

Sigh. Lifetime warranties are only for parts that the manufacturer KNOWS will fail. Why would you want to buy that part? Do you enjoy replacing alternators? Cause I know I don't.
Toyota sells every single part of the alternator separately.

ive had a duralast for a long while and if it goes out i know i can take it back and swap it for free so why waste money the dealer is gonna charge way too much for a alt and when it goes out it doesnt have a lifetime warranty and well i guess ur right about changing them its easy for me but some people just dont have the time and tools to keep doing it but either way id still go buy the lifetime warranty one just for the warranty really take your old one and get a core i think i ended up spending like 80 for my alt on my 93 22re havent had to replace my 92 3.0 alt yet lol
