97 tacoma wouldn't start after month long sit
Hi guys, i need some advice. I just bought my first tacoma, a 97 2.7. I haven't touched it for a month because i was trying to sell my car. The car is sold now so i go to start my truck yesterday and it turned over and fired immediately, then died. Then it would just turn over and over and occasionaly fire once. I tried this for about a minute of off and on turning this thing over. I should note that i pressed the accelerator a couple times after cranking for 30 seconds, which i know is kind of a no no. The truck has 6 week old gas in it which came from Walmart and there was 1/4 tank. It has been cool here and was humid yesterday. I went and got 2 gallons of new gas and dumped it in. Tried starting it again and it turned over for 10 seconds fired occasionaly. Tried again and it started to fire and barely started and started spewing a little white smoke and maybe a little blue. I got out and the smoke didn't smell like burning oil, more like a varnish smell. Bad gas perhaps? Or condensation made water in the gas? Anyways, has this ever happened to any of you, and what could have happened. I haven't driven this truck much, but it has never given me a problem before. One other question, when i was turning this thing over i was cringing because i knew the cylinders were dry from not running for a while. Does the oil pump create enough pressure when the engine is turning over to get oil into the top end and cylinders. My gut feeling is no. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks,

Definitely sounds (smells?) like bad gas to me. You should probably siphon out as much of the old stuff as you can and put some nice new stuff in, along with some fuel system cleaner.

check plugs, wires.... Check that you are getting spark, maybe the coil is bad....tacoma's have cop's aka coil on plugs. Your fuel injectors may need attention also. Maybe spray a little bit of gas into the throttle body and see what happens but don't be excessive with this as it tends to be bad on dry cylinders.
Good luck.
Good luck.

Got it going and it's running fine now. After i added 2 gallons of new gas to the 1/4 tank of old fuel it barely started then smoked, then ran fine. I now have a full tank of fuel and it's running fine. I think i might have been bad gas and condensation in the tank. I'm going to change over the plugs and do all the basic maintenance in a few days. Thanks for the help.

Put some of this in your tank if you're going to leave it sit for a while. Run it a couple minutes on a low tank to let it get through to your entire fuel system.
