97 Tacoma D-Cab???

I spent the last 5 years lusting over the extra room of the 01-04 Taco Double cabs. One reason I never got one was i couldn't get a 5 speed, and i've already got too much time and money wrapped up into the modifications of my 97 Taco. My son (seen in my avitar) is 18 months old and loved to ride in the truck. But 4 months ago we had a daughter and there was no physical way we could all still fit in the truck anymore. So I set out late last year to transform my 97 Extra Cab into a Double cab. Aftert months and months of looking for cabs from salvage yards, and private parties, I ended up bidding on trucks at insurance auctions. With no luck for almost 3 months (about 25 trucks) I finally ended up scoring a 2004 Taco D-Cab V6 prerunner. So the Project started to take off.

So here is what i started out with in June of this year

And this is what rolled out of my garage this last weekend.

This is a combination of a bunch of different trucks to make it work. The cab, bed, interior, gas tank and 3 doors are from the 04, one door is from an 03 2WD reg cab, The fenders are from an 02 prerunner, The hood and grill are the only body parts that are reused from my 97. The wiring is this project was a nightmare. Not only did i have to combine two trucks that were manufactured almost 8 years apart, I also had to combine the 97 Manual tranny engine harness with the 04 Auto Tranny prerunner interior/cab harness. One other thing i wanted in this project was I have always loved the early Tacoma grill, So since the 04 was smashed I decided that i would put a 95-97 front end on this project.

There are still a bunch of small things that need to be completed, mostly interior parts, and a couple of electrical bugs. Next big thing is going to be paint.

Anyone in NorCal work for a bodyshop that want's to help me out?

Steve

Nice work Steve, but in the next year or 2, you'll have to swap out the D-cab for a 4Runner body if your family gets any bigger

I actually considered using Dave's 4Runner body when i got it last year... But I don't want to shorten my wheel base, and i like having the truck bed. Actually there is more room in the D-cab than in my 96 4Runner... I thought they'd be about the same. I've considered getting one of those third row seats for my 4Runner, but haven't done that just yet.

The old guy is actually Dick Foster. he's kinda a legend on TTORA... He has been told many times that that shirt rocks.
