97 Runner Transfer case issues?

I just need to know if the transfer case in my truck is chain driven.
In 4x4 it pops like a stretched chain. (so my mechanic friend says). And it makes sense. The 4x4 works, but, when I give it any kind of throttle, it pops loose. So, is this true and how hard is it to change? Im not afraid to do it. Just wanted to make sure before I got too deep into it.

Ok. So, it's a chain drive. And, I've been all over the Internet looking for a place to buy a new chain. No one has it so I might either have to go to the dealer personally which is 30 miles away or replace the whole damn case. Hopefully not the latter.

Well the dealer wants $675.00 for the chain new. But I found a used complete transfer case with 80k miles on it for 450.. Should I do it?

When you say that it pops loose under throttle, do you mean its not staying engaged and shifts back to 2wd? If so it sounds more like a linkage or bushing issue rather than the case itself. I would recommend checking to make sure what your issue is before buying parts.

No, it stays engaged. But when I give it a good amount of throttle, it pops like a bicycle with a loose chain.

Have you actually checked the fluid level?
You find more out under the truck.

Fluid is full. Even if it wasn't, the chain would still pop from being stretched.
