97 4runner won't start

Hey guys,

My 4runner this morning wouldn't start, i turn the key and it sounds like it's going to start but then doesn't. All the lights and stereo work but it just wont start. The past couple of days, it's had trouble starting then i would lift up the back seat(drivers side) and press down on the fuel line wires? and it would start immediately. But today nothing. Any ideas?

I checked my engine oil dipstick and it's pretty much dry, could that be it?

i moved some wires under the backseat, they're on the side and the connectors are white. Now the car starts, it's a little more rough than it used to be but at least it starts.

Not sure, but sounds like the wires are for the fuel pump. Check for loose connections or worn insulation. Don't forget to add some oil.

yeah you might want to put some oil in it, but I agree with paul the wires could be broken somewhere causing it to not get a good connection. You might want to look at the whole harness from the fuel pump all the way forward before a fire starts or something......

Wow you got a few things possibly going on.

You describe those connections as white which makes me think corrosion-so clean those up and cover them if possible to prevent a repeat.

Yes- if you have no oil pressure your vehicle will not want to start-that is a good thing to prevent possible damage. My oil filter blew off! once (piece o crap Firestone filter) and sure enough the truck would not start to limp it to the curb. So drain and fill your oil and be sure you get some oil pressure by turning key to acc and then start position but not engaging the starter.

The starter not firing could be as simple as the contacts. This is a common issue with the 3rd gen starter. You can spend a bunch and replace the whole starter but it probably just needs the contacts rebuilt.

Search "starter contacts" here and t4r.org. Rockcrawler sells them or get them at the dealership and get er done. Carry a fire extinguisher with you for awhile so it will not be needed. Some have suggested that failure to fix may lead to a fire....

Best of luck and let's be checking your oil more regularly-you are either dripping it (leaking) or burning it and neither is a good thing if you are not keeping it topped off.

Let us know what ya find out. We are all here to learn. Okay I am.
