97 4Runner rides like a Brick, what shocks should I get?

I have a 97 4runner and it looks like the shocks are the OEM shocks from 97. The 4Runner feels like it just it gets bounced all over the place like the shocks are bad and it hits hard just going over speed bumps at like 10-15 MPH. This rig is not seeing any trails now that I am off to the Azore islands and it is the only DD we have. Any help would be appreciated.

there are lots you can try, i would recommend Old Man Emu or Rancho RS5000XL, alot of people like Bilstein, i would too but i have heard as many horror stories as good stories, i live in Belize, pot hole hevean, and my rancho 5000s have held up really well, but im getting a Old Man emu 2" lift so i'll then have OME shocks. i used to have a 2003 Tundra with Bilstein shocks, they where nice, and a very comfy ride on dirt roads an off road.

OME comforts without a doubt.

I've used Rancho RS5000 and Bilsteins on my 98 Tacoma. Both would be good choices for performance and responsive ride. I've also heard the KYB are pretty good.

If they are the original shocks, just about anything new will improve the ride, but I imagine you want something to last as long as the OEM shocks have.

I replaced the stockers with Tokico TrekMaster's. They ride really well and have lifetime warranty. Good choice in my book.
