97 4runner 4x4 front end grind/rub
I have searched, most of the threads that are similar are not updated with a solution. So I am posting here to hopefully get a better idea of what my problem might be.
Last weekend I started hearing a rubbing noise like a washer maching. It has become louder and its bugging me. It picks up with speed.
I checked the brake pads and they still have plenty of life on them. Rotated the tires and the noise is still there. I read online that it might be the wheel bearings, but the noise does not change when I turn the wheel. Is there some grease points that I am not seeing? Also, when I had the tire off I was turning the rotor and it was pretty stiff, not sure if that was normal.
What else should I check?

I have something similar going on and currently working on a wheel bearing replacement. Should be assembled tomorrow night when I get the spindles back from the machine shop.
My droning noise is loudest between 20-85km/hr and only changes pitch with suspension load and slight changes when turning. It appears to be louder with cooler weather too. I've only experienced one bad wheel bearing in the past and it made obvious change in volume and pitch when turning. This isn't quite the same as I remembered the old one (old VW GTI)
I've done some reading and one guy traced his down to the bearing on the front diff drive shaft after changing his front wheel bearings too. I'm hoping mine is a wheel bearing and fixed tomorrow night. Id like to do a 1400km round trip to visit family for the holiday.

Machine shop to have the bearings pressed out and in. Everybody I heard said it's a complete hooker to do yourself and the shop said the same thing.
I reassembled last night and took it for a test drive. It appears better, but still makes a whirring/droning noise that is speed dependent and changes pitch over bumps. Slight change in pitch around corners.
Being that my rear axle was just overhauled, I'm thinking it might be the output shaft bearings on the front diff. Can somebody confirm this? My buddy with a 03 Tacoma has the exact or similiar situation. We now have both changed our front hub bearings.

Well I replaced my wheel bearings and the sound persists.
After taking a closer look i discovered my tires are cupped and thinking that might be the noise. I'll probably be putting new tires on in a few months here.
The question is why they are cupped. Most say worn suspension and the best I can figure is my struts are showing their age, but they aren't bad. I'll replace those at time of tire change too. Everything else seems tight.
