96 4runner head gasket blown again
Crap my head gasket blew. I just found out from a friend that 4runners had problems with the head gaskets. so I did some searching and found this site. I also called toyota and found out that it was replaced in 99 so they will not replace the headgasket under Recall again. But read on another site that If I push it I may be able to get it covered as it is a Customer Satisfaction thing. well I doubt I will get it covered. Stupid lady at the dealer said well it has been 4 years and that is a long time. Long time my foot. my toyota pick up has been running for over 10 years with never a gasket blown. sure it needed a new starter and belts and I had to do some maintinence on it but never a head gasket and it has 250K miles. some of my jeeps are running with origional gaskets from the 50's
So in a few weeks I will be ordering parts and going at it myself. which sucks as I am just about finished with my wwii jeep restoration and this will take away from that.
Has anybody had 2 head gaskes blow? and had them both replaced under recall? Is there somplace I should wright a letter to letting them know my displeasure in having a toyota that likes to blow headgaskets. as far as I am concerned head gaskets shouldn't be blowing before the engine.
any trick I should look out for while I take it apart myself? would it be easier to remove the engine to do the job or just do in the truck? I replaced my last car a 94 mustang with the 4runner after I replaced the headgaskets in that. it just took a few evenings of labor.
not really looking forward to it but it is good to have skills and the tools I don't have to pay. but it would be real nice if I could get it covered so I could keep playing with my jeep.
Thanks for any info.

What engine do you have? I have heard of them going more than once in the 3.0L. especially if the block or head surfaces were not in perfect condition when the new gasket went in. Mine original only lasted for 50,000 miles. I am getting worried because I'm now at 101,000 miles and the idle is rough like it was the last time the HG went. If mine blows again I am thinking about an 3.4L engine swap.

The dealer did mine twice. Once at about 60K and again at about 90K. They said that there was a head gasket design revision between the first time it was replaced and the second time it needed to be replaced.
The other factor is that I have a very good relationship with my dealer. They have done all the maintenance on my Toyota rigs since 1986. They have given me allot of "freebies" over the years because of this.
I wish you the best of luck getting yours replaced.
