94 pickup dx reliability questions

I have questions about reliability. The truck is a 94 dx reg cab v6 4x4. It has 86000 miles. Are there any problems with this model year that I should be aware of? Head gasket issues?? I am new to this forum so if this post needs to be deleted, please shoot me a private message as to why. Thanks in advance..

There is a headgasket recall on a lot of the 3.0 V6 (3vze) engines. Have the dealership run your VIN or call Toyota HQ at 1-800-331-4331.

Otherwise, if taken care of, 86k isn't bad at all. Manual or Auto? Manual would be nice given that the 3.0 is such a slowpoke.

Welcome to the forum!

It's a 5 speed. Another question is a headlight issue. High beam does not work. They will flash high if the lever is pulled but go out altogether if the lever is pushed into the high beam position. Any ideas?? Thanks for the input..

Do a forum search for high mileage threads, you'll be amazed! 200k is quite common, 300k isn't all that rare either... I put 240k on one and have 218k on my current one. My 90 is the same as your 94, I have 3.0 and 5-speed.

The 22RE and the 3.0 are both quite reliable. The 3.0 will need the timing chain replaced occasionally (some folks claim every 50k - but mine has never been changed.) Unless you insist on revving the pi$$ out of it all the time - no worries. Otherwise - just like any other engine - you'll need an oil pump one day (90k to 120k is common) and a water pump one day (about the same) and that's about it. Change the oil and filters and drive it. Same for the rest of the drivetrain - very durable. As with any IFS, the CV boots will need replaced once in a while, and you'll need an occasional CV shaft itself once in a while if you wheel, but those are minor. It's well built.

Your headlight issue sounds like the dimmer switch is bad, but it could be a connection in the column harness and/or plug. Nope, come to think of it, if it was a connection or broken wire they wouldn't work when you pull the lever to the "flash" position. Has to be the switch.

I have a 94 truck 5 speed also. It has been a good truck so far. I bought it with 150,000 miles on it. I have 188,000 now. I have done some mods. Some I like some I don't like.

For the headlight issue go to 4crawler.com Roger has a write up on the exact issue.

Plus he has a headlight upgrade write up. That has been the best mod so far. I hate night driving and the extra light is amazing. I of course went a little over board with the bulbs I got 90 watt low beam and 130 watt high beam. I have had a few people flash their high beams but not alot.

Just my opinion .
