92 Wont start

Hey, I recently bought a 92 4wd, 4cyl. toyota pickup. It needs some work but its in good shape. Well I was working on it today trying to find this vacuum leak and I fixed some hoses I started the truck to see if those hoses where the problem, it seemed that I got it (the engine was only running for about 50 seconds), when i started it there was a noise like under my glove box (like a constant bang but very little) I pulled a wire thinking it was a speaker wire after I turned the engine off. Then I was doin more work on the engine (putting hoses nice and neat, there also was a plug uninstalled I plugged it in, etc.). Well me and my budd wanted to take it outside and see if we can straigten the core support (just a dent by left headlight), we had everything ready chain, etc.. I went to start it and all I got was a "sisss" the fuel beging injected in the fuel injector, ther was no turn over nothing just the fuel. The battery is charged, all ground wires are attached, I cannot find a thing, my budd and I are stumbed. Also there is this hose coming off the idle screw (I think, right next to the fuel injector) and its coming striaght from the bottom but I dont know whick nipple it goes on.

Thanks,
Mario

Could you post some pics of the hoses and plug your talking about? The only thing I can think of near the glove box engine related is the ECU located under the passenger kick panel. Never heard of one making a banging noise though. Did you try reversing some of the thing you did??

I will try and get pics up tomorrow. It wasnt so much as a banging noise but I think it only does it when the air or heat is on, the a/c was taken out. Yes I did try reversing almost everything I did but no luck.

Thanks,
Mario

Sorry no pics forgot the camera when I went to the garage. The hose I am talking about comes directly from the bottom of the white plastic screw (idle adjustment screw maybe). I was playing with it today but samething happened, but I was thinking could it be the starter? And where are the starter contacts at?

Thanks,
Mario

Pics would help a lot, maybe someone will chime in. As for the starter there's a nice writeup with pics in the Tech write-up section. I'll look tomorrow to see if I can help with the hose location, it's to dark to see anything outside tonight (got my sled apart in the garage).

Well I got it started today, I was reading all this post aout contacts, the sternoids or how ever you spell that word. So I checked it all out, all seemed to be okay but a plug was lose so I pluged it in tried to start but samething so I did what my dad told me he said he used to have a car when he was young and it did the samething he said "I used to hit the starter with the hammer and it fired right up" so I was getting pretty mad so I gave it a shot, a couple little hits first but did the samething then I hit it like 5 or 6 times pretty hard, and it turned over I was in shock so I kept turning the key it took a good 20sec to finally fire up but I was happy. I only ran it for 20sec I was running out of daylight and in a garage. But what do you think it is, did I have a dead spot, or just need new contacts?

Thanks,
Mario

You hit it with a hammer!? LOL. Man you just don't see that in any manuals, but I know what he's talking about. You'ld probably get the same result by repeatedly twisting the key in the ignition rapidly. The successive little jolts move the position on the contact points little by little until it finds a good spot and off it turns. Pull the starter and rebuild or replace it, check out the Tech section on the how tos. Sounds like thats your immediate problem.
