'91 4Runner Failed smog...
Hey guys... just wanted to let you know that my Runner failed my smog test. The readings were ridiculously high for Carbon Monoxide and Hydro-Carbons. My 4Runner is now considered a "Gross-Polluter". There was no diagnosis from the guys so, I have to take it to an authorized repair shop. Anyway... any ideas how much it might be to get it runnin' good? Sorry if it's a dumb question (I'm pretty much a NOOB).

That was my first thought. It's probably the original cat. Also, would having gas treatment in the tank effect it in any way? My list of things I want to replace are the plugs, air filter, cat, and also to take a look at my distributor cap...

Well, the guys that did it let it sit... but they tested it twice. It was running warm I guess.. For CO, I think my reading was 4.08 and the max is .7... and I'll have to get my measurement sheet before I can tell you what my HC meas. is...

hm... I want to replace some stuff anyway, to kind of bring it up to date with the high flow cats and whatnot... I'll also drive it around for a while before I take it for a re-test. On the HC reading (now that I have the paper in front of me) I measured in at 270 where the max was 121 for 15mph (1,653 rpms). I think it's kind of weird... the vapor on cold mornings when started doesn't have any blue/purple hue to it... it doesn't even smoke the slightest bit...

doesnt sound right... if the technician is a moron they can easily screw up the test..... its pretty stright forward though... do you have bigger tires? gears? if the tech didnt compensate for that, then they did not test it properly....

it gets expensive.. but i say take it somewhere else..... and get them to test it warm... also the gas cleaner could have an effect, actually it probably did... if you look att the special additives that are supposed to help you to pass smog.. it says run the bottle through at least one full tank before.. and then test with the engien warm and only so much fuel in it.....
