83 truck, idles rough, stalls

I have an 83 4x4 that i bought recently and it was running great, i just took it on a two hour drive to tahoe and back. I went on some trails in tahoe and worked it pretty hard. It also worked hard on the freeway getting there and back. It ran fine the whole time but then when i got home and pulled in the driveway it was idling really rough then it stalled. It still runs fine at higher rpm but when it starts idling it gets rough again and stalls. I have a 22r engine with a five speed. I was wondering if there are any common problems before i start replacing things. thanks.

is the engine new? When i put a new engine in my 82 it would do that after getting off the freeway. I would just compression start it and keep going until i needed to stop again. Anyways after awhile it stopped and it doesnt do it anymore. the only things i did was run some carb cleaner in the tank and take apart and clean the carb.

It isnt new, but the top end and carb were rebuilt. But its been a few thousand miles since then, and this is the first time ive had this problem. Im wondering if its something that happened from driving the truck to a much higher elevation then back.

I'd start checking vacuum lines. If you don't find a problem there, I would pull the plugs and have a look at them. Also check for the signs of a head gasket failure: white, sweet smelling smoke, white residue under the oil cap, and low coolant level. If you still don't find anything move on to a compression check.

Good Luck

What carb cleaners work well on the 22R?

Do the 22r carbs have an altitude compensator? If it does, you may be right that it is the altitude change. On my old jeep it a cylinder about the size of a roll of TP on the back of the carb. a real PIA. I don't think it ever worked right even when new. Otherwise hook up a vacuum guage and see what it tells you. They are cheap at any parts stores and coe with directions. It will be able to point to look closer at stuck valves, piston rings etc. A simple starting point. Also you can check for vacuum leaks w/ a can of choke cleaner. Judiciously spray it around the vacuum fittings if the engine changes speed or quality the leak is in that vicinity. Good luck.

you might check the distributor. if you get mudd or some sort of gunk in there, it can tend to make it stall. more than likely, it sounds like a vacuum problem, as others here have noted.

i once encountered a very similar problem in my old '83, due to some very bad gas, believe it not. and no, i wasn't consuming burritos at the time.

Rough Idle in Drive but Not in Neutral

I'm having a similar issue with my 89 4Runner. It idles rough and shakes pretty hard periodically when it's idling in drive but it idles pretty smoothly in neutral. I was driving for a few hours yesterday and it stalled a few times towards the end so I started putting it in neutral at red lights. Its fine while I'm driving.
