Question 83 Carburated to 85 fuel injected

Ok I have a 1983 toyota 4x4, just blew up the 22r in it, and now I have a 1985 fuel injected motor out of a 4runner....I am just wondering if anyone has been through this or can give me info on what I am getting myself into....I have never done it but I heard it has been done, just looking for some help...

-Thanks

You might try a search over on the pirate board.

It's quite the project really... need to have the harness and computer intact or be somewhat electricaly inclined. Totally doable, the motor will mount right up, and you would want the w56 trans for better results/ gains wich means driveshaft work too, or at least the driveshafts from the runner also. ots more gadgets to hook up and figure out for you. The pirate board does have a lot of info on this swap. Any specific questions on this? Or just " Can it be done"? Sure, you could drop a 350 sm block, or 4.3 vortec if you wanted. I would stay toy and do the efi swap personally.

You will need to get a hold of a good wiring diagram for a 22re for an 85.
You can't bypass the afm, the ecu uses it along w/ the o2 to determine how lean or rich you are. The ecu will have a lead for cold start, afm, clutch start cancel, ign and etc.. etc... You have a huge job ahead of you just in the wiring dept. You will be adding a terminal block under the hood and all sorts of things... light in the dash for check engine and etc... also you will be adding another fuse block, or at least inline for the ecu. You can just rip out the wiring in your engine bay for anything engine related... cause you need to push the efi harness through the fire wall to use. Theres a real good write up here:http://toyotatavern.topcities.com/EFI.htm

By the way... you plan to use your L52 5pd w/ the 22re? A W56 is what you really need.

i think the l52 will hold up to a 22re if it's not already going downhill. anything bigger and it'll probably eat itself though

the easiest way to do a 22RE swap by far would be to get the upper plenum and wiring/sensors/ecu off an '83 or '84 celica. that will simplify the swap big time. here's a link:

since you want to use the 85 harness, the easiest way would be to just separate out the stuff that's needed to run the engine and transplant it into your 83. never been able to figure out why anybody would try to graft in unnecessary stuff(e.g. the whole harness) to fit the gauges and lights and such
