82 - 85 trany ?

I am trying to purchase an 85 pickup. I found one locally but it needs a transmission. Included with the 85 is a 82 for parts. The guy says the 82 trany is fine he just never got around to installing it in the 85. Are these transmissions interchangable? Are there any areas I should pay particular attention to when looking at thee two trucks? Thanks, Andrew

the '82 tranny and clutch will bolt up to any R engine(20R, 22R, 22RE, 22RTE) without problem. the main issue with '83 and below trannies is that they're around 4" shorter than an '84 and newer transmission. they also tend to be weaker. to fit it in an '85 you'll need to move your transmission crossmember and either use the '82's driveshafts or get new ones made

it should! just remember if you go from an '84-up to an '83-down tranny you'll need to move your crossmember and lengthen your rear shaft!

A tranny from a '90 will work but the shifters will come up in different spots and it'll require different shift forks in the t-case.

Kyle said it already... the motor isn't the issue. Any tranny 79-83 will bolt up to any 22r or 22re engine. The difference is the tranny leingth. 79-83 trannies (L40, L43, L50 and L52) are app. 4" shorter than a trannies of 84-9?
(G52, W56 and etc...).
If you want to use the 82 tranny in the 85, go ahead... but you'll have to do like Kyle said and use the driveshaft/s and crossmember out of the 82 also... or jut flip the 85 crossmember around and drill new holes.
