Is a 7MGTE a good Candidate for swap

My son has a 90 4Runner and I've never seen a more gutless engine. I read on this site that a Supra engine is best for a swap. Can any of you Gurus tell me if this will work, if it is a good choice and on a scale 1-10 how hard/Extensive.

there is a good write up on there about it. Also jeremy (NCSU4runnner) has performed this on his 2nd gen. Hopefully he will chime in with more details for you.

yes its a good swap but stick to the 7MGE unless you really want alot of power, not having a turbo simplifies alot of things

my website is absurdly outdated, which i hope to remedy sometime in the near future, but supracharged.com has quite an active forum full of info.

IMO the inline 6 setup is the best motor toyota ever built

The 1-10 scale depends HEAVILY on your experience. When i started out i didnt know much it was quite challenging but i learned alot along the way and would have no problems doing it again.

I really want to do do the 7mgte swap too. Another 150hp sounds real nice! Check out Jeremy's link to supracharged. They have some really good info on there and I have spent quite a bit of time on that site.

Another swap I'm considering is a 1UZ (lexus 4.0 V8). I really want a 5 spd, so I think the 7m would be the way to go with a manual. To do a manual 1UZ would run about $2000 just for the tranny, custom bell housing and a few brackets. I really like the I6 configuration too. One of the best IMHO.

An easier solution is to use a 3.4L, the supra engine is more fun, but also a lot more complicated with the turbo, intercooler, length of the engine etc.
You also have to find certain parts to match the truck trannie to the inline engine. I recallthat the input shaft lengths are different between the R150F transmissions used in the trucks and the supras.
The 3.4L V6 from the '96 & up tacomas and 4Runners has almost the same bottom end of the engine. This allows it to use the same engine mounts and belhousing to engine bolt pattern as the 3.0L which comes stock in the '90 4Runner.
