75k maintenance questions

HI
I hit 75k recently and would like to change the fluids in the diffs, transmission and transfer case (I don't know what is in there now but it was changed at 57k). I especially would like to get rid of the notchy shifting I have by putting some synthetic fluid like AMSOIL or Redline in the transmission. Can anyone tell me how much I need for the manual transmission and transfer case.
thx

Hi Roadtripr,

I happen to be readying myself for this same maintenance although my '96 3rd gen. 4Runner has 120k. i did have this done before but am going to do it myself this time around (brother did it last time for me).
I used Valvoline max-life ATF fluid Dexron III and it mentions that it's good for Toyotas in the back. Good for high mileage transmissions. Comes in these crimson red plastic bottles.

I should say that before you start be sure you get yourself the drain and fill gaskets for the rear diff, transfer case and front differential. Thanks to the tech sheets found on this site I knew to get these before I start. Actually, this is what I'm waiting for right now.

The fluids - front diff 1.2 quarts(75W-90, Hypoid Gear Oil GL-5), rear diff 2.6 quarts(80W-90,hypoid Gear oil GL-5), transfer case 1.1 quarts(75W-90,GEar Oil Gl-5). This is from a tech sheet you can find on this site.

i guess I wanna throw my 2 cents in - don't forget to lube your driveshaft Yoke (is that what you call them?)joints too. And that one shaft's joints that goes from the transfer case to the front diff.

You'll need to drop the skid plates on the front - not hard at all. I took them off just yesterday to get at my radiator's drain spiggot. You'll need a 14 metric deep socket, short extension. There are 3 up front, 2 in the middle of the front plate. loosen these up, then totally take out the 2 14 metric bolts shared by the front and rear skid plates. Loosen the rear skid plate's 2 14mm bolts and the front and rear plates will come loose. No you can take off the loosened bolts from the front plate and gain access to the front diff.

Good luck, I'll be doing my lube in the next few weeks. Still gotta get the gear oil.

Thanks for the reply goretro77. I have a manual trans though so I won't be getting the GL-5 (does not work well with syncros I heard). I will probably have a dealer do the work as I am not very experienced with car maintenance. I just wanted to figure out what I needed to order. Maybe I will do this myself in the future when I figure out how easy it is .

Hi!
I should've mentioned that I have an automatic '96 4wd 4Runner. I would'nt mind the stick shift at all but the wife had something to say about that.

Doh! I didn;t realize you had a manual trans. I got my classic Celica to get my manual transmission addiction satisfied.

Glad to help where I can. Keep these great trucks rolling!

Road,

No problem. Did the engine work for you?

Carsten,

Yes, and definitely search "MT-90". I had written alot about it, esp about overfilling it through the top.

Hey, are you going to make it to Pismo 4RJ II?
