6-speed for your thoughts

I have a 200 4runner and I happen to come accross something very interesting today. I went to my transmission class today and found something very interesting. My teacher was showing us the lab where we are going to spend the nextfew class periods rebuilding trannys. He was going through the back room and tole us that if we desired, we could take a crack at disassembling the new 6-speed tranny out of a new tacoma. Keep in mind that there are a few different flavors in the new tranny family for the tacos. You have the 2WD version and the 4WD version. You also have the 5-speed autos. But I more or less have my hands on a 4WD 6-speed manual with no miles on it. I cant resist but wanting to throw it in my 4runner!!! Does anyone know the bolt pattern on the 2000 5-speed manual and the 2004 tacoma 6-speed? I think that I can donate my tranny and take this one. Is there any one who can asses this situation for me and provide some insight on this beautiful turn of events? I am thinking of a nice new 6-speed for my baby!

Oh and here is some pics of my whip if anyone wants to comment on it. I thank you guys for everything that you have found on the 4runners, because my 4runner would not be a bad-ass machine without you! Thanks...

let us all know if you manage to talk yourself into the swap, or if it is even possible.
I also have a 00 5-speed and would love to get my hands on a 6-speed.

IF the swap is indeed possible.

There is a show on speedvision called unique whips. All they do is trick out cars for celebrities and what not. Whip is another word for a modded vehicle.

Whips are what over paid snots, douchebags, and wiggers call thier cars...please cease and decist immediately, unless you fit into one of the above categories...

There is a thread around here somewhere about the actual origin of whip as a term for Automobiles.
It was appplied to VERY high end cars, especially mercedes, and then the hip hop crowd brought it to mean every nasty-assed caprice and ghetto cruiser out there...

Again...let it go.

*sigh*

Did '04 come with 6 speeds? I didn't think it was til the new gen '05s that it came out and I have a hard time believing it would work.

You are correct ... No Tacoma had a 6-speed manual prior to the arrival of the 2005+ generation.

I've been hearing of some people having problems with those new 6 speed trannys. Not sure exactly what the problem is but I'd think twice about swapping one in at this point. Just a guess, but that may be why this school had one donated for training purposes.

aghhh... you call your 4runner a "whip" ...
and, your name on forum is "5spd 4 life" and your asking about putting an auto into your 4runner just seems ironically funny to me

There've been numerous problems cited (grinding / tough shifting / etc.) in the Aisin 6-speed on the 2005+ Tacomas. Although there is a 'clutch feel' TSB which mods things to allow better clutch pedal throw (all the way down to the floor), there's no TSB on the tranny itself.

Toyota has quietly swapped out some owners' trannies for new units (especially on X-Runners), but they've not given out any clues as to what (if anything) is wrong with the tranny itself. There's at least one XR owner over at CustomTacos who's gone through dealer transmission replacement more than once.

I originally reserved judgment in case the originally scattered problems for X-Runners lay with the owners (a surprising number of which had never driven a truck, or even a manual, before ...). After a while, though, I've had to conclude there really is something 'wrong' somewhere.

Not sure if the clutch issue explains the tranny failures, but I suppose one could always make a case for that, too ...

If you need info on this tranny check out the ih8mud project forum. There is a guy there who has been working on a big project to mate one to his 4.5 80 series cruiser engine.

Alright guys, I will cease calling my car a whip. Didnt know that a word could cause such negative attude, and I was just being funny. Sorry about the mix-up on the year, but I did make the mistake. But I am going to look at the bolt patters on both transmissions. I will also measure the length on both to see if Toyota lenghtened the output shaft on the 6-speed or if they shortened it to compensate for the added gear. I will get back with you guys on those things. I am not a wigger!!!!!

Im going to start researching this, because if I can mate it to my 5VZ-FE, my friend is going to buy my R150F and put it in his double cab taco.

Well, it sounds like you can forget about this swap guys.

Quote from Custom Tacos, posted by Gadget:
"Won't fit.

The bell housing on the 6 speed is not removable. It is one piece that bolts to the front of the tranny and becomes the face of the tranny housing. To make a new bell housing would really be expensive.

The starter mount for the 1GR is on the opposit side then the 5VZ. Also the input shaft is not setup to use a pilot bearing like the 5vz trannys are."

This was posted about the 2wd tranny out of an x-runner that someone wanted to swap into a s-runner though. There may be a chance that the 2wd 6-speed tranny in the x-runner is different than the 4wd tranny in the regular tacos, I doubt it though.

yes I already know this, but I have plans to get the 4.0 engine as well....

my only worry is the starter clearing the steering shaft. If not I'll save the whole set-up for my buggy build-up...

I'm still wondering if the bolt pattern is the same on the block though......

As for the input shaft, most cases there is a work around......
