5spd Transmission problems
If you caught the topic I posted about a week ago, I thought I had a bad install on a clutch replacement for my 86 4Runner.
However, after dropping the transmission again we discovered the problem to be much worst.
Basically, the transmission was leaking fluid which caused among other things destruction to 4th gear. The syncros are bad, as are the fingers, so trans is toast.
A full rebuild is ~ $1k. More than what I want to spend right now.
I'm considering a junkyard transmission and found one for $500 with a 90 day warranty.
I know that with a junkyard transmission I'm pretty much rolling the dice.
Anyone have to replace their transmission here? Is $500 a reasonable price for a junkyard tranny w/90 day warranty?

I am on the other side of the coast here.. but I know that most yards can not get rid of 5spds here and they may only bring $250... You are not using TAP are you?

No, not TAP. I've had experience with them before so I know to stay away.
I don't know the going rate for this stuff, but if they go for $250 on the other coast, the cost can't be double on this side.
The place I found was called R&A transmissions in Los Angeles, a japanese used engine shop referred me to them.
I'll shop around.

I replaced a 5 speed manual tranny in a Mazda B2200. I got the tranny from a junkyard. No problems at all.
Just make sure you know the mileage from the junkyard tranny.
I blew out the 3rd gear synchro on the original 5 speed because I thought Mazda trucks were Top Fuel dragsters.
