Right now I have a 93 4runner with the V6 and 5 speed. I'm running 33's and am in need of new gears. I know that 4.88's will get me back to pretty much stock. But what can I expect with 5.29's? I may go to 35's but that wont be for a long time.

Reason I ask is because on other boards I have found tons of 3rd members with 5.29s and lockers but have not found one 4.88 3rd. So I'm asking mainly out of curiosity. I do a lot of highway driving so my main concern is gas mileage and rpm's. Thanks for your help!

I am in the same boat I found someone selling some 4.88 diffs all I have to do is install them when I get the money. I think if you have a standard the 4.88's would be better for the highway. 5.29's are great for someone who has a automatic and they need the extra bit of gearing but I think 4.88's should be suffcient enough if you are going from 4.56's at least for 33's.

I have a 95 5 speed, and I have 4:88's with 31's right now (in the rear), and I love it. By far, it is the best mod I've ever done. I plan on only going to 32's, which is why I went with 4:88's, If I had 33's, I'd say go for the 5:29's, and do the lockers at the same time.

When I get off of this aricraft carrier (soon), I plan on removing my front diff, and I'm going to try and install a 7.5" Supra LSD from an 83 model, hopefully it'll work, then I'll have Supra LSD's at both ends. I'm also going to disable the ADD so there won't be any instances of only one side of the diff spinning, and not the other, causing excessive wear on the LSD clutches.

What should you expect?

I have them with an auto and 3.0 in my 95 on 33's. It is pretty much perfect as it sits. I think that most with sticks do not bother regearing until 35's which would make 5.29's perfect.

In your situation, I would just get them and be done if I were serious about getting 35's. If it will be more than a year until 35's, then just wait and deal with the performance and mileage.

This is slightly off-topic but here it goes: Hopefully soon I will get the procomp 4 inch lift for my '93 Pickup. Could I fit 35's under there? Fully flexed, would the rear tires rub and... well I guess then they wouldn't be fully flexed. I'm asking because I'd LIKE to (hopefully) do the 4 inch suspension lift, then 35's and gears and lockers.

4" of lift isnt going to fit 35s without some major trimming, the proper wheels and some toehr stuff, possibly glass fenders.... etc......

also i have a 22r and a 5 speed stick with an 8" rear 4x2.. i have 31s and 3.07 gears... i get awesome freeway mileage, but city sucks... and i can still light them up... whenever i want...... probably my centerforce dual friction is helping though

The problem with just running my stock gears is I drive from Western WA to Eastern WA. It's a 300 mile drive with lots of hills, 2 mountain passes, and lots of other crap. I had a hard time making the trip with my 32" A/T's. So I don't know what to expect from 33's. My main concern is gas mileage, rpm's, and the speedometer. I know I'll love the extra power

I agree. I loved my automatic when I had 5.71s with 33's. That would be about the same as a 5-speed with 5.29s/33s. Unless you like to drive 90 mph a lot, go for it.[/QUOTE]

Speed limits around here are never over 70 so I usually stay under 75. I don't really care if I can go 90, my trucks too scary anyways. I just dont want my rpm's to be at 4 grand while I'm going 70.

If you have a stick, it is interesting you are bothered by RPM's and mileage rather than clutch wear.

What is your gearing now? If it is 4.10, then I would get 4.88's. If it is 4.56's, then 5.29's make sense.

When i have the funds i'll be getting 5.29's for my 33's and probably a rear toyota e-locker. I have a 5spd with 4.56's now i think.

I'll have to check on my gearing. I'm not exactly sure what I have. I thought I had 4.10's but I may be wrong

I never really thought about clutch wear. I just hear people talking about how high the rpm's might be and how the gas mileage can drop.

What are your guys thoughts on this gearing chart (see link below)? According to most of your guys recommendations, and with respect to this chart, you're more aiming for the performance aspect of your gearing if I am correct and less towards gas mileage? If this is the case, is the reason guys are getting ˟˟˟˟˟ty gas mileage with the 3.0 partly due to running the more performance aimed gears? I guess the 3.0 isn't the most efficient engine though - but still could this have something to do with it?

The reason I'm going with 4.88's or 5.29's depending on what my gearing is now is so that I can actually accelerate. I don't really believe that chart. You might get decent gas mileage but with my 33's I have to downshift on EVERY hill. I cant imagine what it'll be like driving to school. I'll probably be in 3rd and 4th gear the entire way. That just doesn't seem practical even if the chart says it is.

Yeah, it sucks. I may have found some 4.88 3rd members for sale though. I'd really like to save up some money for ARB lockers though before I would install them. But that may take another couple years :pat:

It's not like I have a problem moving my arm to shift from 5th to 4th and so on. It's the fact that I need to be in 4th or sometimes 3rd to maintain highway speed. I don't think it's too good to be going 70 in 4th or even 3rd for too long.
