4x4 light on dash, how to disengage...?
I just bought an 01 4Runner and was cleaning it inside while it was off but the ignition key was turned to power the stereo and I moved the 4x4 shifter and now the 4x4 light is flashing and I can't figure out how to get it back to 2wd...? (It didn't come with an owners manual). Thank you so much for your help....

don't know if shifters vary from 99-02 but the 97 4wd shifter is j shaped. starting from the low point on the left is 2hi (everyday driving) the notch down is 4 hi, shift it to the right is neutral, up is 4lo. reverse that to end up in 2wd. your shift knob should have the layout pressed into it

I don't know if it is the same as mine but try pulling it back as far as possible, then to the left as far as possible then straight up, that should do it. Let me know

Thank you!
Thanks 89silverpu and RooRRunner.... I guess you have to go into reverse too and that disengages it. Thanks too RooRRunner for your post in the Toytec lift thread. Lots of help. But I better learn how to work the 4x4 before lifting..? lol

If the light is blinking, then you are not yet fully locked in 4WD. When it locks in, it will go solid.
On your 01, you likely have the VF3AM transfer case. If so, the pattern is not J or U shape, but just straight front to back with 4x4 low "4L" being up front, and hi "H" being towards the back (neutral is in the middle). You will also have your 4WD pushbutton on the driver's side of the transfer case lever. To be in RWD, you want your transfer case shifter in the "H" position, and your 4WD button not pressed.
It sometimes is a bit finicky to go into and out of 4WD when you are not moving. I always do it when I'm rolling slightly. For now, though, start the truck, make sure your transfer case lever is fully in the "H" position, and make sure the 4WD button on your transfer case lever is not pressed in. If the light continues blinking, put your foot on the brake, shift the tranny to drive, then reverse, then drive, then reverse. It should eventually unlock for you.

Thats the same as my 97 limited. Do you have a 4wd button on the shifter? Put the shifter in H, and just press it and it will disengage 4wd. You do have to be moving a little bit for it to kick in and out of 4wd.
